DA Biography

23rd Judicial District Attorney Ricky L. Babin graduated in 1985 from Louisiana State Universityearning a B.S. Degree. Babin continued on to the Paul M. Hebert Law School at Louisiana State Universityreceiving his Law Degree in 1992. He was a member of the Louisiana Law Review and the Order of the Coif.

Babin has practiced civil law beginning in 1992 and began his practice in criminal court as a criminal defense attorney in the 23rd Judicial District.

In 1995he joined the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Officeprosecuting sex offensesdrug cases and handling civil litigation. In 2002Babin was appointed First Assistant District Attorneyand he served in that capacity through 2008.

In the fall of 2008Babin was elected to his first term as District Attorney and was sworn in on January 122009. The 23rd Judicial District encompasses Ascension ParishAssumption Parish and St. James Parishwith a combined residency of upwards of 170,000 people. The office handles approximately 3,500 felonies and 24,000 misdemeanors annually.

In 2014Babin secured his second term in office after running again as an unopposed candidate.

Since taking officeBabin was appointed by former Governor Bobby Jindal to the Louisiana Sentencing Commission. He now also serves on the Louisiana District Attorney’s Association Legislative Committee Board of Directors.
