How smart flying kites are turning wind into power — anywhereanytime

At high altitudesthe wind blows stronger and more consistently. These particularly strong air currents are called high-altitude wind – and the higher you gothe faster it blows. With our visionary kitesSkySails converts this natural resource into clean energy – airborne wind energy. At altitudes of up to 750 meterthese extremely robust kites spin in “figures of eight” loops while connected to a ground station via a cable winch. The resulting traction force is converted into clean energy by a generator on the ground. Moving constantly higher and loweralmost like a yo-yothe kite continuously generates energy.

Our kite systems do not require any foundations or heavy installations. Their lightweightmobile construction uses up to 90 percent fewer material resources than conventional renewable energy technologies. Easy and quick to installthese airborne wind generation systems can be used even in hard-to access locations such as remote islands. The power loop

Flying in a figure-eight patternour kites generate maximum lift and tensile force. As they climbthey pull a tether from a ground-based winchwhich spins a generator to produce electricity.

Once the tether is fully extendedthe kite dives back using minimal energyrewinding the ether. Then the cycle starts again — a cleancontinuous loop of airborne powerlike a high-tech yo-yo in the sky.

1 Kite

Our kites capture the high-altitude winds to generate energy. They are made of high-performance textiles to ensure their durability. Air intakes and air brakes allow changing the aerodynamic profile during startoperationand landing. Steering lines connect the kite’s canopy to the control pod below. A line system inside the canopy allows reefing it for storage.

2 Control Pod

The brain of our system: The control pod ensures optimal and secure flight for continuousefficient energy generation. It contains the autopilot system that steers the kite. Several installed sensors continuously measure all relevant signals. It is powered by a ram air turbine.

3 Tether

The tether connects the control pod and the winch inside the ground station. It is made of HMPE and specially developed for applications with a high demand for safety (e.g.cranes and lifts).

4 Launch & landing system

A reliable and flexible launch and landing system is required to safely launch and land the power kite. The mast can be lowered to attach or unmount it completely.

5 Ground station and grid connection module

The compact design of our ground station makes it easy to transport and quick to install. It contains the winch with generator & gearboxcontrol cabinetsinverterand the energy storage system.

6 Tripod with ring mount

The whole system stands on a simple three-legged steel structure mounted on small concrete plates. A yaw system corrects the ground station’s alignment with the wind direction.

Setting new standards: Kyo was developed for regions with high energy requirements. The scalable and autonomous system achieves an annual energy output of up to 1,780 MWh with kites of up to 450 m² wing surface area.

In low-wind or unsafe conditionsthe kite is safely brought down. An intelligent control system continuously monitors weatherlocation and adjusts the flight path. Operations can resume once suitable wind returns.
SkySails currently operates three systemswith more in the pipeline. We run a test and development facility in KlixbüllGermanyand a commercial project in Mauritius – both already feeding clean energy into the grid. In Taiwanwe’re installing Asia’s first airborne wind system. Additional international projects are underway in the PhilippinesCape Verdeand beyond.
The ideal site has a flat topography with no large obstacles in the prevailing wind directionmaking agricultural or unused land the ideal choice. Howevercertain obstacleslike treessolar power plantsor industrial facilitiesare acceptable within the operating areabut specific approval may be required.
