Would be nice if Acura offered some powertrain updates like the old 321hp/289tq sport hybrid or use the 3.5L with 310hp/272tq from the RLX as an option.

I have both a 19 MDX Sport Hybrid (+87,000 miles) and 18 RLX Sport Hybrid (+48,000 miles with the 310hp/272tq 3.5L+hybrid system). My maintenance cost for both has come out cheaper compared to my sh-awd 08 RDX and 11 MDX Adv at the same mileage points. The only serviceable EV component is the secondary liquid coolant for the DC inverter at 105,000 miles (uses the same coolant as engine).

Factor in for the Sport Hybrid:
  • no Auto Stop/Start with way less wear/tear on starter (uses 7DCT motor/generator for in/out of EV mode)
  • both are "suppose" to have VCM; butI've not 100% sure and maybe electric motors mask it to be invisible in daily driving
  • no serpentine belt,
  • longer lasting brake pads with regen braking,
  • no resurfacing needed for FNC brake rotors,
  • 4.5qts of engine oil for port injected 257hp/218tq 3.0L I.C.E. and 310hp/272tq 3.5L V-6 RLX Sport Hybrid (rather have the 3.5L+hybrid)
  • no awd transfer case
  • gas saving at 25-27 mpgs always for my +4500lbs MDX (remove 200lbs of mechanical sh-awd and replace with 400lbs of EV components+lighter 3.0L)
  • only a 1X oil change for 7DCT at 4qts of DW-1
  • improved performance at +5000 feet with 3 electric motors with zero loss in mpgs compared to 3.5L N.A. I.C.E. or 3.0 turbo. I'm probably around +/-275 hp at +5000 feet with my Sport Hybrid.

The Sport Hybrid tech has been around for +13 years and should be paid for? It was only $1500 MSRP for the sport hybrid powertrain for the MDX compared to a similar 3.5L 3rd Gen MDX sh-awd tech or Adv model. It works equally as well with the P.I. 3.0L or D.I. 3.5L engines. Just zero towing because of the 7DCT; butyou can still use an OEM hitch/harness with a donut/full size spare underneath for a hitch mounted bike rack or cargo carrier.

Both those cars still really young so they are not an example of long term ownership. The jury is still out years 8-15 and 150k plus mile. Other manufactures have demonstrated the gas savings is less than the longer term cost of a battery replacementelectric torque converter / motor replacementand turbo issue. I know several mechanics who are seeing very costly repairs with this tech.

The whole reason I purchased the MDX ADV ASEC was it has no battery related or turbo tech. Better yetthe cabin still has buttons (you don’t have to talk to the car and have it interrupt driving) and did Acura has yet to follow Tesla with all touch screens which will be very costly later in life. I would invest 65k+ in unproven tech being tested long term on a market.

The 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 has produced several examples of 250k plus engines over 13 years old and still running strong. With a VCM muzzlerI’ve seen examples lasting 350k plus. Some J35 drivetrains in Japan have 500k plus miles no issues. AWD transfer case is not an issue if properly maintained a will often outlast the engine.

Someone needs to do an analysis of the gas / carbon saved versus how much has become throw away and probably costing far more emissions and fuel in the long run.

If you’re passionate about hybrids / EVs: there are other cars for you.

There is nothing maintenance wise that can be done to prevent the stripping of the spline that a lot of the owners are posting about online. 60k+ miles seems to be the sweet spot but some have reported failures earlier.

This is affecting both regular MDXs and the Type-S. Type-S TLX even worsepossibly because of the factory launch mode.

Acura is well awarehence releasing the fix with hardened parts to prevent failure from what I've found.

Dealers are replacing both the Transfer Case and Transmissions to address the issue.

Other than the Honda sourced 1.5T fuel mixing with oil issue with certain model yearsAcura's other turbos seemed very reliable (2.3T 1st Gen RDX2nd Gen NSX2.0T 3rd Gen RDXand current 3.0T TLX/MDX Type-S).

That is true re bad advice. I practice the cool down and watch my oil. I have done top-side oil changes as early as every 4-5K.

It's cheaper to pull and fill with new oil then to test the old. It takes less than 10 minutes in the driveway.

To all those that attack people who change oil more often than every 15K milesdon't! You do you.

I’m not seeing much with the spline stripping on non type S. You have more information on a proposed fix for non type S?

There was a video I found on YouTube when I was researching my issue where the person showed the stripped splinewhen he walked away it was a non-Type-S judging by the exhaust tips. I dont have it saved but I'm sure one can find it if you search.

Have to ....Some fascinating OCI and Oil analysis data here. I'm a pure layman when coming to oil analysishowever I have always practiced doing OCs much sooner than the ridiculous 15K mikleage thresholds. Being Old Schooleven in my leased cars (my 1922 and now my 25 MDX) I changed the Oil at approximately 4-5K Miles regardless of the type of usage of the vehicle (Commuting 3 hours a dayetc) . In factmy deal with the 25 MDX A-Spec Advance leased on Feb 12025came with a 1st Oil Change Freebie. The dealer wouldn't honor it until I got to at least 60% Service Minder indicator. Since I drive primarily locally (being Retired does THAT)I only hit that mileage mark about 2 months ago. When I had the 22 MDX Advancethe deal included 4 Free oil Changes I had the 1st one done at 1,500 Milesprimarily bc I had strong intentions that I would Buy it at lease end. When I got too that point in January 2025 (after a 6 month lease extension form August 2024) I didn't pull the trigger to buy it - I should have regretting that to thuis day. The 25 is terrific (aside for some "jerkiness" in the tranny lower gear shifts especially during first cold drives)but in retrospect I made a mistake not going forth to buy it.... probably "romanced" by the new Touch Screen - Google Based (It's OK) massaging seats the new Urban Gray Pearl with Orchid interiorBUT disappointed by the lack of Sirius Radio Receiverand IMHO a changeover to a B&O sound system as a waste of $$$$$ - the ELS system was more than good.

That press release refers to "product enhancements" for the MDXwhich could be anythingincluding minor feature adds or a trim level add/delete. And why would Acura do another MMR for 2027when a new generation for the MDX would be expected in 2028 if they stick to the 7-year lifecycle for previous MDX generations?

They have been doing this "upcoming year" preview every January for a few years now. They never mention a model unless it is an MMR. MDX is their flagship and they have gone off schedule in the past to make sure it is not stale. They did a full interior/exterior MMR in 2017but didn't want to fall behind and did an infotainment MMR again in 2018 for Carplay and Android Auto.

They told reporters in Japan that their upcoming large-vehicle Hybrid system will be based on their current Honda system (electric motor primary drive charged by a 2.0L engine)but scaled up and swapping the engine with a 3.0L V6.

So likely a similar J30 as used in the 20 MDX Hybrid and 26 TypeSsurrounded by a scaled up transmission/motor design based on the Civic/Accord/CRV/Prelude.

They told reporters 27-30 is when they plan to roll it out across the lineup. MDX would be a great vehicle to do a small-volume trial rollout earlymoving to the Odyssey when they are ready for high volume sales.

The dealer who sold me my Hybrid MDX told me a Hybrid is returning summer 26. I'm skepticalbut the current press announcements don't technically disagree with that. An MDX Hybrid soft launch in summer would be MY27and it is a product enhancement.

Incredibly unlikelybut it is weird that they forecasted 2% Acura sales growth in CY26 despite losing the TLX and ZDX and discontinuing the RDX in mid 26. They must have some excitement replacing itand with the RSX launching into no federal tax credits nor cafe incentivesthe low volume Integra TypeS being the only other changeit is possible that the MDX update is bigger than they want to disclose right now.

Still best looking in its class so hopefully they’ll
-Bring back satellite radio
-Bring back ELS
-Add digital view mirror
-Improve A/C and add rear seat vents
-Add usb ports third row
-Add cornering lights ala Lexus
-Fix hollow sound when closing doors.
Won’t hold my breath though.
Alsohopefully they add;

  • a better infotainment system without s dependency on google and real in car maps with better guidance like BMW or mercedes,
  • option to upgrade piano black trim to wood and other materials.
  • Another 3-4 gallons added capacity to the gas tank would be as well.

AC works great on my 25 and Im actually very happy with B&O but never had ELS to compare. Third row has USB ports but it would be nice if they were C and not A.

EPA said they were removing the stop/start incemtive last summerso likely a permanent option will begin in 2027.

Previously the EPA gave an artificial 1 mpg increase on a window sticker if stop start was not permanently disablable.

Acura had to spend so much money on the stop / start recall that I'm sure they will kill it as soon as allowed.
