Michelle Obama recently sat down for an interview ahead of the launch of her new bookThe Look. During the discussionthe attorney and author discussed how she currently felt free and made decisions for herself that didn’t concern othersespecially her children and husband.
During the discussionshe shared that her two daughtersSasha and Maliahad grown up and that her husband was doing well. “We are the former president and first lady,” she told PEOPLE. “It’ll be 10 yearsalmostthat we have not been in that job. Okay? We are formers.” She stressed that her family’s current place in life felt “freeing.”
Also in the interviewObamawho turned 61 in Januarydiscussed what it was like being in her sixties. “Oha wonderful time. It’s a wonderful time,” she shared. “I feel like this is the first time in my life that when I say and do somethinghere in this interviewwriting this bookrolling it out in this waythese are my choices.”
Moreovershe revealed she dyed her graying hair. “I’m not wincing [when I see one] but I’m not leaving it there long,” she added. She explained that her practice of dying her hair came from her late motherMarian Robinsonwho died last year. She revealed that her mother had “beautiful” sandy blonde hair that meshed well with gray. “I was like‘YeahI’m going to be doing that too,'” she further stated.
Obama expressed she would let other aspects of her aging go on naturallynoting she didn’t do anything else to tackle itapart from dying her hair. “I thinkfortunatelyBlack don’t crackso I’m doing all right,” she added. “But yeahI will be dying my hair until there is no dye in the land.”
Obama also discussed her healthstressing its importance. She revealed she controlled her dietexercisedand made regular visits to the doctoradding that she never missed a mammogram. The Becoming author shared that she did everything required to maintain her health so she could enjoy her life. She emphasized she wasn’t illadding“I’m as vibrant as I’ve ever been.”
