Grantmaking:
Introduce Yourself

Our framework for grantmaking alignment

Our grantmaking process is rooted in trust-based philanthropywhich means we take a special interest in learninglisteningand supporting those closest to the work. To be mindful of a nonprofits’ time and expertisewe are intentional in how we engage with them every step of the way. To save nonprofits time spent on letters of inquiry and requests for proposalswe do not have an open application process. Insteadwe learn about nonprofits through ongoing researchcommunity outreachand from the introductions submitted through this page.

At the heart of our grantmaking is the desire to help children grow strong from the roots up. Sowe support nonprofits who are helping children and their families thrive. In addition to mission alignmentwe consider other factors like nonprofits that respond creatively to community needsinvolve community in decision-makingand are valued by the community. We also consider special qualities like nonprofits whose staff have lived experience. When opportunities arise to expand our workthese are some of the things we look for.

For children to have a strong start in lifethey must be healthysafeloved and learning. Thereforewe invest in four program areas: healthsafety & justicebasic needsand early learning. Across these program areaswe support direct servicesas well as advocacy. When possiblewe prioritize prevention and early-intervention strategies. Learn more about our program areas.

To stay focused on our missionwe do not fund the following:

  • Organizations without a current nonprofit statusindividualslobbyistspolitical campaignsor religious purposes.
  • National organizations without a Wisconsin presence.
  • Wisconsin organizations serving only one county (outside of Dane County).
  • Organizations fundraising for other organizations.

Tell us a bit about your organization

2026 UPDATE

In 2025we clarified our commitment to support children in their earliest years of life. Moving forwardour funding will focus on very young children and their families. While we likely won’t be adding many new partners in 2026we will prioritize inquiries from nonprofits that are currently serving children from birth through age threeand their families.

If you believe your organization’s mission aligns with a Roots & Wings program area and funding approachwe encourage you to introduce yourself. If we identify a potential fitwe will reach out to learn moreor keep you in mind for future funding opportunities. Given our small staff size and lean approachwe cannot accept or respond to unsolicited proposals. Insteadwe value the opportunity to hear more about your work through the form below.
