A. 316.228 Lamps or flags on projecting load.

(1) Except as provided in subsection (2)whenever the load upon any vehicle extends to the rear 4 feet or more beyond the bed or body of such vehiclethere shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of the loadat the times specified in s. 316.217two red lamps visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the reartwo red reflectors visible at night from all distances within 600 feet to 100 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful lower beams of headlamps and located so as to indicate maximum widthand on each side one red lamp visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the side and located so as to indicate maximum overhang. There shall be displayed at all other times on any vehicle having a load which extends beyond its sides or more than 4 feet beyond its rearred flagsnot less than 18 inches squaremarking the extremities of such loadat each point where a lamp would otherwise be required by this section. A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318.

(2) Any commercial motor vehicle or trailer transporting a load of unprocessed logs or pulpwoodwhich load extends more than 4 feet beyond the rear of the body or bed of such vehiclemust have securely fixed as close as practical to the end of any such projection one amber strobe-type lamp equipped with a multidirectional type lens so mounted as to be visible from the rear and both sides of the projecting load. If the mounting of one strobe lamp cannot be accomplished so that it is visible from the rear and both sides of the projecting loadmultiple strobe lights must be used to meet the visibility requirements of this subsection. The strobe lamp must flash at a rate of at least 60 flashes per minute and must be plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the rear and sides of the projecting load at any time of the day or night. The lamp must be operating at any time of the day or night when the vehicle is operated on any highway or parked on the shoulder or immediately adjacent to the traveled portion of any public roadway. The projecting load must also be marked with a red flag as described in subsection (1).

§ 40-8-27. Lightflagor strobe lamp on projecting load; requirements for lamp and flag

(a) Except as provided in subsection (b) of this Code sectionwhenever the load upon any vehicle extends to the rear four feet or more beyond the bed or body of such vehiclethere shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of the loadat the times specified in Code Section 40-8-20a red light plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the sides and rear. The red light required under this Code section shall be in addition to the red rear light required upon every vehicle. At any other time there shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of such load a flag or flags as described in subsection (c) of this Code section not less than 18 inches square and so hung that the entire area is visible to the driver of a vehicle approaching from the rear.

(b) Any motor vehicle or trailer transporting a load of logslong pulpwoodpolesor posts which extend more than four feet beyond the rear of the body or bed of such vehicle shall have securely affixed as close as practical to the end of any such projection one amber strobe type lamp equipped with a multidirectional type lens so mounted as to be visible from the rear and both sides of the projecting load. If the mounting of one strobe lamp cannot be accomplished so that it is visible from the rear and both sides of the projecting loadmultiple strobe lights shall be utilized so as to meet the visibility requirements of this subsection. The strobe lamp shall flash at a rate of at least 60 flashes per minute and shall be plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the rear and sides of the projecting load any time of the day or night. The lamp shall be operating at any time of the day or night when the vehicle is operated on any highway or parked on the shoulder or immediately adjacent to the traveled portion of any public roadway. The projecting load shall also be marked with a flag or flags as described in subsection (c) of this Code section.

Michigan

Michigan Vehicle Code requires that if a load extends 4 feet or greater from the bed or body of a vehiclea red flag is required to be attached to the far rear end of the load. It specifies that the flag must be red and at least 12 inches square. A red light is required to be attached one half hour after sunset and one half hour before sunrise.

NRS 484D.860 Display of red lights or flag on load. (1) The foremost edge of the projecting load at its outermost extremity shall be marked with an amber lamp visible from the front and side;

(2) The rearmost edge of the projecting load at its outermost extremity shall be marked with a red lamp visible from the rear and side.

(c) Projecting load marker lamps shall conform to the requirements for clearanceside-marker and identification lamps.

At all other times one (1) red flagat least eighteen inches (18”) squaremade of clothsynthetic or man-made materialshall be so displayed; or o (2) One (1) amber light-emitting diode (LED) lightcomplying with SAE J595equipped with a multidirectional type lensmounted so as to be visible from the rear and from both sides of the projecting load. If the mounting of one (1) amber LED light cannot be accomplished so that it is visible from the rear and from both sides of the projecting loadmultiple amber LED lightscomplying with SAE J595shall be utilized so as to meet the visibility requirements of this subdivision (e)(2). The amber LED light shall flash at a rate of at least sixty (60) flashes per minute and shall be plainly visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet (500′) from the rear and sides at a radius of one hundred eighty degrees (180 degrees) of the projecting load. Any LED light shall be constructed of durableweather resistant material and may be powered by the vehicle’s electrical system or by an independent battery systemor both. If the LED light is powered by an independent battery systemthe driver of the vehicle shall have in the driver’s immediate possession chargedspare batteries for use in case of battery failure. Any solid state LED lighting that consists of multiple LED lights shall not have less than eighty-five percent (85%) of the LED lights in operable condition. At all other times one (1) red flagat least eighteen inches (18”) squaremade of clothsynthetic or man-made materialshall be so displayed.

Texas Transportation Code – TRANSP § 547.382. Lighting Equipment on Projecting Loads

(a) A vehicle transporting a load that extends to the rear at least four feet beyond the bed or body of the vehicle shall display on the extreme end of the load at the times specified in Section 547.302(a) :

(1) two red lamps visible at a distance of at least 500 feet from the rear;

(2) two red reflectors that indicate the maximum width and are visible at nighttime at all distances from 100 to 600 feet from the rear when directly in front of lawful lower beams of headlamps;  and

(3) two red lampsone on each sidethat indicate the maximum overhang and are visible at a distance of at least 500 feet from the side.

(b) At all other timesa vehicle transporting a load that extends beyond the vehicle’s sides or more than four feet beyond the vehicle’s rear shall display red flags that:

(1) are at least 12 inches square;

(2) mark the extremities of the load;  and

(3) are placed where a lamp is required by this section.

(1) If a load on a vehicle extends to the rear four feet or more beyond the bed or body of the vehiclethe operator shall display lampsreflectorsor flags at the extreme rear end of the load in accordance with this section.

Whenever the load upon any vehicle extends to the rear four feet or more beyond the bed or body of such vehicle there shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of the loadat the times specified in section two of this articlea red light or lantern plainly visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the sides and rear. The red light or lantern required under this section shall be in addition to the red rear light required upon every vehicle. At any time there shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of such load a red flag or cloth not less than twelve inches square and so hung that the entire area is visible to the driver of a vehicle approaching from the rear.

347.20 Lamp or flag on projecting load or fixture.

347.20(1)(1) No person shall operate on a highway during hours of darkness any vehicle with a load or fixture thereon extending more than 4 feet beyond the rear of the bed or body thereof unless there is displayed at the extreme rear end of the load or fixture a red light or lantern plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the sides and rear. The red light or lantern shall be in addition to any tail lamp or clearance lamp which the vehicle is required to carry.

(2) No person shall operate on a highwayat times other than hours of darknessany vehicle with a load or fixture thereon extending more than 4 feet beyond the rear of the bed or body thereof unless there is displayed at the extreme rear end of such load or fixture a red flag or cloth not less than 12 inches square and so hung that the entire area is visible to the operator of a vehicle approaching from the rear.

(3) This section does not apply to vehicles loaded with loose hay or straw.

Whenever the load upon any vehicle extends to the rear four (4) feet or more beyond the bed or body of the vehicle there shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of the loadat the times specified in W.S. 31 5 910two (2) red lampstwo (2) red reflectors located so as to indicate maximum widthand on each side one (1) red lamp located so as to indicate maximum overhang. There shall be displayed at all other times on any vehicle having a load which extends beyond its sides or more than four (4) feet beyond its rearred or fluorescent orange flagsnot less than twelve (12) inches squaremarking the extremities of the loadat each point where a lamp would otherwise be required by this section. Lamps and reflectors required in this section shall comply with the regulations of the superintendent.
