Background:
Britain's American colonies broke with the mother country (UK) in 1776 and were recognized as the new nation of the United States of America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
During the 19th and 20th centuries37 new states were added to the original 13 as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions.
The two most traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the Civil War (1861-65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Buoyed by victories in World Wars I and II and the end of the Cold War in 1991 the US remains the world's most powerful nation-state.
The economy is marked by steady growthlow unemployment and inflationand rapid advances in technology.

Political System of the United States
The United States is a federal union of 50 states. Its political system is based on the Constitution of 1787. Ideas of the Enlightenment such as libertyprogresstolerationfraternityconstitutional governmentand separation of church and state were incorporated into the US constitution.
The constitution guarantees political control of the government through the separation of powers between its three branches: legislativeexecutiveand judicial. The separation of powers is known as checks and balances and was introduced to ensure that no government branch has too much power.
The president is considered the center of power in the political system; he is the head of state and the head of government.
The bicameral legislature of the United States is the US Congress; it consists of two chambersthe US Senate (the upper house) and the US House of Representatives (the lower house). Each stateregardless of its populationsends two senators to the Senate.
Since the American Civil Wartwo political partiesthe Democratic Party and the Republican Partyhave been the most important actors in American politics.

Everglades National ParkEverglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. The biosphere reserve and wetland in southern Florida protects about twenty percent of the original Everglades. The park is a sanctuary for a large number of birds and reptiles. In 2010 Everglades National Park was again included on the List of World Heritage in Danger because of serious and continuing degradation of its aquatic ecosystem. [2]
Hawai'i Volcanoes National ParkThe park contains the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes - Kīlauea (1,250 m) and Mauna Loa (4,170 m). Volcanic eruptions create a constantly changing landscapean example of island-building through volcanic processes.
Lavathe semi-liquid rock that erupted from a volcanohas reached the waters off Hawaii Island. The Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
