How can I find out if my inmate was sent to SHU?

The Special Housing Unit (SHU)often referred to as "the hole," is a segregated area within a correctional facility where inmates are placed for disciplinary reasonsadministrative segregationor protective custody. Inmates in the SHU experience more restrictive conditionsincluding limited contact with other inmates and reduced privileges. If you suspect that your loved one has been sent to the SHUthe best course of action is to contact the facility directly. Ask to speak with the inmate's case manager or counseloras they are typically responsible for handling inmate assignments and can provide information regarding the inmate’s status. Be prepared to provide the inmate's full name and identification number for verification purposes. Depending on the facility's policiesyou may be informed of the reason and expected duration of their placement in the SHU .

When I search on the BOP offender locatorit shows my friend in one prison but on here it shows anotherwhy would that be?

This discrepancy is likely due to a transfer. When an inmate is transferred between federal prisonsthe Bureau of Prisons (BOP) offender locator may temporarily show the original facility until the transfer is fully processed and the inmate arrives at the new location. Transfers can occur for several reasonsincluding changes in custody levelparticipation in specific programsor administrative needs. If you give us the inmate's name we can update it for you so that you may use the services on the website
