Appleは2026年5月11日にiOS 26.5に加えて、iPadOS 26.5、macOS Tahoe 26.5、watchOS 26.5、tvOS 26.5、およびvisionOS 26.5をリリースしました。iOS 26.5には新しい壁紙やAppleマップで人気スポットをオススメしてくれる機能のほか、Androidユーザーと暗号化されたRCSメッセージをやり取りできる機能が追加されています。

AppleとGoogleによると、両社は業界の垣根を越えてRCS(Rich Communication Services)にエンドツーエンドの暗号化を導入する取り組みを進めており、従来のショートメッセージサービス(SMS)に代わるプラットフォームをまたいだメッセージング形式のセキュリティとプライバシーを強化してきたとのこと。

そしてAppleは2026年5月11日にiOS 26.5をリリースし、iOS 26.5を搭載したiPhoneのユーザー、対応する通信事業者、Googleメッセージの最新バージョンを搭載したAndroidユーザーを対象に、エンドツーエンドで暗号化されたRCSメッセージングをベータ版で提供開始しました。

RCSメッセージがエンドツーエンドで暗号化されることで、デバイス間でのメッセージ送受信中に内容を読み取られるリスクが大きく減少します。暗号化はデフォルトでオンになっており、新しいRCSチャットと既存のRCSチャットの両方で自動的に有効になります。以下の赤枠で示しているロックアイコンが表示されている場合、その会話が暗号化されていることを示しています。


また、iOS 26.5では新しい壁紙「Pride Luminance」が搭載されています。Pride Luminanceは2026年5月4日にウォッチフェイスと共に発表されたデザインで、世界中のLGBTQ+コミュニティを祝福するためLGBTQ+コミュニティを形作る多様な色彩が表現されています。カラーストライプはオプションから変更が可能で、単色から最大12色まで選択してカスタムできます。


2026年3月にリリースされていたiOS 26.5ベータでは、Appleマップに「トレンドスポット機能」が追加されており、今回のメジャーアップデートで正式実装となりました。トレンドスポット機能では、マップを開くと近隣で流行しているものやユーザーの最近の検索履歴などに基づいたオススメのスポットが表示されます。なお、Appleマップについては「2026年夏までにモバイル版とウェブ版の両方で検索結果の上位に広告が掲載されるようになる」という報道もあります。

そのほか、iOS 26.5ではApp Storeのサブスクリプションに月額払いオプション付きの12ヶ月契約という新たな選択肢が追加されました。この機能はiOS 26.4で既に世界的に提供されていましたが、アメリカのユーザーが選択するためにはiOS 26.5へのアップデートが必要です。また、Appleのリマインダーアプリにも変更が加えられており、スヌーズ機能でより正確な時刻を確認できるようになりました。

今後の予定としては、Appleは現地時間の2026年6月8日から6月12日までWWDC 2026の開催を発表しており、次期iPhone向けメジャーソフトウェアアップデートとなるiOS 27の発表と開発者向けベータ版も同日に公開されると予想されています。
