Wellyou have asked us to guess which iPad model you have as well as its current iPadOS version.
The likely answer is your iPad is too old to accept iPadOS 18.
If that’s not the answerthen we would also need to knowin addition to the information abovewhat you triedwhat you sawwhat workedwhat failederror message contentsetc.
If your iPad is too old to support iOS 18then you won't get any of the new featuresand any app that requires iOS 18 will not run. Other than thatnothing will happen. Your iPad will continue to work just the way it did before iOS 18 was released.
Regards.

Any security issues?
While your iPad may not be capable of update to iPadOS 18.xApple will almost certainly continue with point security updates for devices that cannot be updated beyond iPadOS 17.x. The same remains true for iPadOS 15.x and 16.x at this time.
At some point in the futureperhaps a year or two hencesecurity updates for major security issues affecting iPadOS 17.x will eventually cease - while updates for older versions will end much sooner.
As suchyou might reasonably consider your iPad as having begun its "twilight" period of support.
What happens if the iPad can’t get beyond iOS 17.7?
Any security issues?
