The reason Batman ultimately stopped short of killing Superman had nothing to do with both mothers having the same name. While Clark saying that name caught him off guardonce Lois explained it's his mother's nameBruce realized in that moment that Superman was as human as anyone else. Rememberright before"Martha"Batman said he probably isn't even human. But by having a motherBruce realized Clark was as human as anyone elsesince all humans have a mother. That's what that scene is all about.
It also comes to a more satisfying conclusion due to great callbacks to previously unseen characters and is allowed to be more mature by being able to show more of the violence rather than hide from it or edit it out. Additionallyseeing more of Henry Cavill's Superman saving people is always welcome.
Not all of the problems are fixed as the unnecessarily destructive third act is obviously still present as is the forced franchise set-up that still feels very clunky. Ben Affleck's portrayal of Batman is still excellent but the increased violence makes him killing even more distracting.
This is a review for the Ultimate Edition extended cutnot the theatrical release.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a film caught between brilliance and miscommunication-a grandoperatic story about fearpowerand manipulation that was tragically misunderstood by both critics and audiences. Many dismissed it as a chaotic superhero clashfailing to grasp that Lex Luthor orchestrated the entire conflict as a commentary on how ideologytraumaand mistrust can turn saviors into enemies. Yet the film also shares the blame; its dense symbolismnonlinear storytellingand lack of narrative clarity left casual viewers alienated. What could have been a modern myth about the fragility of heroism and the corruption of faith in power instead became a victim of its own ambition-too intelligent for those seeking a simple comic book movieyet too convoluted to communicate its full vision.
A lot of film critics and audience members keep asking why Batman and Superman are fighting in Batman v Superman. Alrightlet me break it down for you:
The conflict between Batman and Superman in the film was orchestrated entirely by Lex Luthor. Clark Kent was investigating Batmanbelieving him to have become a brutal vigilante acting as judgejuryand executioner in Gotham. In truthit was Luthor's mercenaries-working with corrupt inmates-who were killing criminals marked with Batman's brandframing him as a murderer. Luthoralready aware of Clark's true identity as Supermanmanipulated events to turn the two heroes against each other.
On the other handBruce Wayne had personally witnessed the destruction caused by Superman's battle with Zod-the deaths and suffering of his employees and innocent people during the collateral damage. After twenty years of fighting crime in GothamBruce had grown deeply cynical. His experience taught him that even the noble can be corruptedcontrolledor coerced. Seeing Superman's unchecked power and the devastation it broughtBruce's fear and skepticism were justified. As Alfred warns"It starts with the feverthe rage... that turns good men cruel."
MeanwhileLuthor also preyed on Bruce's guilt by manipulating one of his employeesWally. Luthor intercepted and returned Wally's disability checksmaking it appear as though Wayne Enterprises had abandoned him. Crippledbitterand desperateWally lost faith in both Superman and Bruce Wayne. Luthor then used him as a pawn in the Capitol bombingframing Superman as an accomplice and deepening Bruce's belief that Superman's existence invited chaos and destruction.
Luthor in Batman v Superman more of a philosopher than a villain. Lex's bitterness isn't random jealousy - it's existential outrage. His logic is brutally consistent:
"If God is all-powerfulHe cannot be all-good.
If He is all-goodHe cannot be all-powerful."
Supermanto himembodies that contradiction. Here's a being who looks like a man yet wields godlike powerand everyone calls him a savior. But Lex sees the flaw - if power like that existsand it's not given to allthen divinity isn't fair. Godor fatechose sides.
It might have helped if the story were told in a more linearstraightforward way-after allit's a comic book movieand casual viewers make up most of the audience. Then againone could argue that films shouldn't have to dumb themselves down just to be easily digestible.
It may come across as pretentious to critics and audiences who lack the intellectual capacity to grasp the plot and symbolism.
The duty of a filmmaker is to elevate the audiencenot to conform to a society that's grown intellectually complacent - just as audiences must raise their own intelligence to meet halfway.
If the film studio had had more couragewho knows in which directions this story would have continued.
The Ultimate Edition is certainly a superior product in all segments compared to the theatrical version. The gaps in the story are filledand the characters have more depth.
In PG-13 films the action is lukewarmbloodlessand that degrades the impression of the whole film. The film received intensityatmosphere and worthy action in its R-rated version. A lot of films failed due to the short-sightedness of producers and film studios.
The castwith the exception of Jesse Eisenbergis excellent. YesI didn't like Lex Luthorbut Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman are great. Henry Cavill seems to have stepped down from the pages of comics and is certainly a great choice for this role.
In this version his character is more complete and gains in depth. Ben Affleck excellently portrayed this iconic figure. His Batman is darkfurious and brutal. The only miss is Lex Luthorbut maybe his character would improve in the sequels that would follow.
Apart from the improved storythe action is bettermore brutal and there are no restrictions set by the PG-13 standard.
The casting is really greatalthough Lex Luthor is a complete failurebut like I saidmaybe his character would have evolved further had we been able to see how the story unfolded later. The cinematography is excellentand the costume design itself did a great job.
This version of the film would definitely have been better acceptedif only the film studio had a little more courage. The action scenes are superbly directed.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition is certainly a big improvement over the theatrical version.

- Goofs(at around 1h 40 mins) When Superman and Batman are fightingBatman releases a smoke bomb. Superman could use his X-ray vision to follow Batman's movementsbut he looks surprised when he goes through the smoke and Batman is gone. In factthese bombs contain lead which disrupts Superman's vision. When Batman is preparing his bombs in the Batcave (at around 1h 18 mins)a chemical formula is written on each bombthe letters "Pb" are present (symbol of lead).
