The Krimml Waterfalls

An average of 5.6 m3 of water per second plunges into the valley via the three drop stages with a total drop height of 380 m.

With around 400,000 visitors a yearthe Krimml Waterfalls are one of the top 10 most visited sights in Austria.

The refreshing spray of the Krimml Waterfalls amidst the stunning backdrop of the Hohe Tauern National Park delights young and old alike. Everything you need to know about the waterfalls can be found at the information point at the entrance to the waterfalls.
The Krimmler Ache forms the source of the Krimml Waterfalls. It begins at the end of the Krimmler Achental valley and first flows gently through approx. 20 km of flat alpine pastures before reaching the end of the valley as a roaring glacial stream and plunging down the mighty steps of the Krimml Waterfalls.
The catchment area of the Krimmler Ache is 110.7 km2approx. 12 % of which is glaciated. This makes the Krimmler Ache a typical glacial stream with a strongly changing water flow. In the months of June and Julyfor examplethe flow is 30 to 40 times higher than in February. As the meltwater takes 9 - 12 hours to flow from the glacier gate to the waterfalls (=18 km)the daily maximum flow occurs between 9 pm and midnight.
