"buy something to us" or "buy something for us"

Hi alldo we say "buy something to us" or "buy something for us"if the meaning is "buy us something"? For example:

My dad bought us a toy car.
My dad bought a toy car to us.
My dad bought a toy car for us.

I hear both "to" and "for" quite frequentlybut I think both are possible depending on the meaning:

buy something for us = help us buy something
buy something to us = buy something then give it to us

Am I right?

  • Nono one uses "buy something to us." I'm surprised you hear it frequently. Perhaps it's Korean English. :)

If soif someone said "he bought a toy car for me"how can we tell whether he bought it as a giftor he helped the individual concerned buy the toy car? :)

"He bought a toy car for me" means that he paid for the toy car and gave it to you. Your second meaning would be conveyed by "He helped me buy a toy car."

    He bought cigarettes for me
would have that kind of ambiguityEB: It could mean that he bought some cigarettes to give to mebut it could easily mean that he carried out my orders and bought the cigarettes I wanted - because I was too busy to go out and buy themor even because I am too young to buy them legally.

That's very similar. He bought the cigarettes and gave them to you in both cases. If he bought cigarettes for himself because you told him to that would be different (but odd ;)).
