Buy something "at" or "for" $100?

I'm wondering which proposition I should use.

I bought something at $100.
I bought something for $100.

Or does it depend on what I buy?

    Do you mean I have to put some words after the price when I use "at"?
    Are "at 99 cents a package" and "at 6 dollars a dozen" correct?
    Also how can I say if I bought two apples and they are 79 cents for both?
     
    Yesit does depend on what you buy. If you say "I bought something at $100" you are implying that the purchase price was variable. For exampleyou would buy company shares "at" a price. "Today he bought BP at 449.00 and Royal Dutch Shell at 2,228.50". You use "at" because you are describing the price level at which the shares are being traded. For normal buying - foodclothesfurniturehousescarsetc - use "for" as Greyfriar said.

    That's a very nice sum-upbut I also got an idea that 'but prices vary all the time for anything.' ielet's say you purchase a pack of ramen on Amazonthe price varies by vendor. In this case how do I decide a preposition?
     
    If you want to buy shares you go to a stock exchange. If you want to buy gold you go to a bullion dealer. The price varies from minute to minute. You buy "at" a price. If you buy from an Amazon trader the trader's price does not vary through the day and you buy "for" a price.
