Display Brightness Settings on PC (not laptop)

    Good evening all,

I hope everyone’s good. I have my machine connected to a UPS via USBnot connected to the power yet just doing some looking into the setup to see what happens when there is no power to check some setting changes when on batteryI would need to ensure the power is reduced using Power Options.

When I simulated a power cuteverything I expected worked apart from one thing. My monitors blinked off and on and went to a higher brightness75%. Upon switching the power back onthe monitors did the same blinking off and on but returned to the previous brightness which is50%.

I had never considered connecting a monitor to the UPS but perhaps I canI always planned to leave it or use a laptop to RDP if needed during a power cutthey’re OLED so this is a viable option. I just cannot find the setting for this. It’s not a laptop so the options are not there but the functionality appears to be.

I have LG UltraGear 27GR95QE-B 27 Inch OLED 2K monitorsadditionallyI do have the LG OnScreen Control software installed but information for that refers to the Windows settings that I cannot seeto change the brightness.
I always seem to find thenot simple to do things.

    Thanks all

    Sean

All desktops I've seen have two brightness controls.

There's a MONITOR brightness control. My MONITORS brightness can only be controlled through the monitors physical buttonsI cannot do it through software. I've never seen monitors whose brightness control can be controlled by sw.

There's also a GRAPHICS CARD -not "Windows"- (be it a discrete one or onboard/processor) brightness control. In my Celeron J4125 based miniPCthat is my most similar computer (I also have desktops but they're ancient systems with discrete graphics cards from ATi/AMD or nVidia and processors/motherboards w/o graphics)you access these settings through the Intel Graphics Command Center (IGCC)clicking first at the left the Display settings and afterwards the color settings. It's better explained here Access Denied .

I think doing RDP from a laptop is significantly better for the UPS battery provided the laptop's battery is chargedalthough I've never had laptops or UPSs nor used RDP myself (judging by the typical monitor consumptions vs desktop computer ones if not very loaded).

As for the monitor brightnessif you want to reconsider the levelsI run all my monitors fixed at about 15-20% MONITOR brightnesswhat doesn't prevent me from seeing them very luminous if I want tomanaging the GRAPHICS CARD brightness and gamma. I use presets selectable with hotkeysa capability provided by ancient enough Catalyst Control CenterATi Tray Tools or classic Riva Tuner (the latter works with the 750Ti and Radeon HD7000 series for which the former two aren't appliablebut Idk about more modern discrete gfxI believe it doesn't work with embedded graphics). I use a dim preset for reading (brightness -25 gamma 0.6)the stock one for photos (brightness 0 gamma 1.0) and a luminous one for dark photossuch as black computer parts (brightness 0 gamma 1.4). Idk if there's a modern app for this. It's a shame that graphics drivers have dropped support for hotkeys. As for IGCC levelsI use dim brightness 15 contrast 12medium brightness 24 contrast 15clear brightness 36 contrast 18maximum brightness 48 contrast 24. The "maximum" preset is ugly but effective at dark photos. IGCC doesn't have hotkeys (imo the gamma setting is more effective than the contrast onebut that's what IGCC has).

    Hello @JLArranz,

Thank you very much for your reply and additional detail on brightness settings. Yesmy monitors have controls to change the brightness which changes how bright the LEDs are. I also have options in GPU driver software to adjust settings which change contrastthe appearance of brightness and so on. They're all fine and function.

My laptop shows this in settings:
Display Brightness Settings on PC (not laptop)-laptop-brightness.png

My desktop show this in settings:
Display Brightness Settings on PC (not laptop)-desktop-brightness.png

I myself have also never come across monitors where the brightness can be adjusted via software. These ones I have come with software to control themthey don't actually have buttonsthey come with remote controls. Anywaynot too important.

Here's a short video demonstrating what I mean:
The software for screen control was running at the timeto show the brightness changing howeverthe results are the same whether or not the software is running.

Video descriptionpower onscreen brightness at minimumset that way. Power is switched off. A short time laterscreens flicker and come back on at 75%. Then switch power back on and they switch back to the initial minimum brightness I had set.

Somewhere in Windows there must be an option for the screen brightness on batteryI cannot access it nowbut it's there somewhere. All I need to do is change it to much less than 75% when on battery.

    Thanks again

    Sean

Your issue may have something to do with the latest Nvidia Game Ready Driver 565.90 if you have that installed?

It has a few issuesparticularly this one which may be related to your issue:
[Digital Vibrance] custom setting does not persist on reboot [4801216]

You can find more information on the issues with the latest driver the Reddit r/nvidia page

Maybe you have to email the UPS maker and/or install the UPS software if you haven't done itaccording to this thread https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...7-a8ebb4a157dd found with this search uninterruptible power supply desktop computer battery settings - Google Search .

    You can try:

    Bright-Master via Softpedia

    Note   Note

    About Bright Master:
The program is designed to adjust the brightness of monitorslaptop displays and other equipment. Runs on Windows 7+ and does not require installation. Works with all external monitors that have DDC/CI supportas well as with built-in displays of laptopsall-in-ones and windows tabletsprovided that the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) service is not disabled.

I have not used this myself.

    Hello,

Thanks allI have solved it now. I had a suggestion to change the brightness when on battery and see if it remembered it. Turns outit did. Wellthe displays remembered it anyway. They’re connected via USB to the machine so that must also link up the UPS.
    New one to me that.

    Anyway.

    Thanks all for your input.

    Cheers
