I bought myself something for Christmas this year. I strayed from milsurps back some years and started collecting lever actions. I already had some Henry's but not a brass frame and Octagonal barreled one.

Congrats. Two comments.

As statedthe Hornady Leverevolution is shorterto reload it you need a Lee Hornady 45-70 diea special tool just for those. Those 325 grain bullets go 1,805 out of my Guide Gunshould be over 2,000 in yours. Mine shoot 1.5 inches with me but probably can do better.

SecondLee makes a 340 grain mold that is great. You can down load to make really fun plinking loads your kids can shootbut they still have enough power to kill Buffalo.

Here is one with Unique pistol powder Those work great. Trajectory is about like a 22. I think it is important to have some trapdoor loads so everybody can enjoy the big bore. Otherwisefull power loads can beat you up pretty quick. I made the mistake when sighting in with a lead sled. I did not strap or hold the barrel down. The recoil jerked the gun up and off the sled about a foot. Sofull power loads you got to hold on to.

I am getting ready to load up my empty 45-70 cases and thought of this this thread. I reloaded all my empty shorter Hornady cases and have lots of 300350 and 405 grain bullets loaded to thumper levels. Soall of these will be Trapdoor and some in between Trapdoor and full powerabout 1,500-1,600 in the Guide Gun. The Lever Evolution are rated at 2,000 fpsthey go 1,805 fps in my shorter guide gun. They are my hunting loadI only buy a few.

Here is my cost break down. I have old primers and powderbut will use current prices of components so any new reloaders get an idea of cost.

Primers. They are 8-9 cents at Academy. $. 09

Powder. 17 grains of Unique for a light load .12
5O grains of IMR 3031 for a serious load. .36
$50 per pound

Bullet. My casting pots and molds have been paid for
for decades. That saidI add 1 cent for wear and
tear and electricity. .01

Lead cost. my 340 grain at $3 pound on line. .15

Case cost. 45-70 can be roared many timesmaybe 20.
That saidI allocate 5 cents about 10 loads. .05
Totals. Trapdoor. 1,200-1,250 fps 42 cents/$8.40 box
Deerhogsbearsgorillas. 66 cents/$13.20 box

Sowhat is wrong with my math?

These are not top loadstop loads add at least 5 grains more powder. Trapdoor loads are funtrajectory like a 22. Kids can shoot them. The middle load are about like a 308 in recoilnot bad but get old after a whilewould make great hog loads. Full power loads are not fun for longif you use a lead sled and forget to strap down the barrelthe gun will jump off the rest and try to leave the bench. But they are why we buy a 45-70.

Just saying..
