This method can be used on the Beretta 686 and like actions. DISCLAMER: This modificatino may void warrantees and if done incorrectly may render the gun unsafe. Do this at your own riskI take no responsibility.
With that out of the way I can begin. This is a simple mod that will cange the auto-safety to a manual safety. The safety still works just the samebut it does not automatically turn on. Some other places tell you to cut or clip parts off. DO NOT DO THIS! You will have metal dust in your action and accelerate wear.
Step one: Remove the butt padstock boltand convex washer. Then remove the reciever from the barrels and stock.

Step two: On the bottom of the reciever there is a main lug with a set screw. Remove the set screw and lug. The lug has an extremely thin slot for your screw driver. It is meant for European toolsbut you can grind one to fit.
Step three: Right under the barrel/safety selector there is a roller pin. Punch this pin out and set it aside.

Step four: You can now remove the safety selector. Pull up on it and set it aside.

Step five: Under where the selector wasa screw is now visible. This is the secondand last screw holding the two reviever parts together. The factory coated the screw with white locktite so you should heat it up. A hair dryer works fine.

Step six: The bottom portion can now be pulled off. Pull straight down and set it aside.

Step seven: look on the under side of the reviever(top part). You can now get to the screw holding down a flat slice of metal and a wire. Unscrew that and take out this part(see picture) Set that aside and assemble your gun just the way you took it apart.

Thanks for the pictures. I found this very helpful. One thing was not included that caused me grief. Nothing was mentioned about the hammers remaining cocked in order to separate the two main parts of the mechanism after removing the screws. Againthanks for the information. It was very helpful. I agree this is the correct way to eliminate the auto safety rather than cutting the part thereby creating metal filings etc.

Both of these posts were very helpful. I was able to execute them without a problem until it was all back together. Now the safety will not move into the full SAFE position. It does move far enough forward to release the hammers and the barrel selector is working as it should. I suppose I could shoot it like this but really want that button all the forward.

Anyone have a clue???

On my 686 Silver Pigeon 1 Fieldall I had to do was take stock offthen loosen the little bolt holding the tension spring around the safety (Step 4 picture bottom screw) then twist the half moon shaped plategrab the safety part that you are removing and pull it out hard. This worked great and I didn't have to take the trigger assembly out. Make sure to tighten up the bolt after completion.
