Update on the MvM Update

September 102025 - TF2 Team

We wanted to thank everyone for all the Workshop submissions. You've given us tons (and we mean WAY more than we expected) of amazing stuff to look through and test.

We don't have a release date for the update yetbut we'll be going through the submissions and working on it. And for those of you interested in the usual seasonal updates? Yup. We're also still working on those.

Mann vs. Machine Maps Needed!

June 232025 - TF2 Team

Thirteen years agowe launched Mann vs. Machinea chilling cautionary tale where an artificial consciousness tried to take all our jobs. You didn't know it back thenbut that was actually a literary device called "speculative" fictionwhere writers (us) accurately predict the future (the present)but then hide it so as not to cause widespread panic.

In an effort to keep panic levels lowand apropos of nothingwe'd like to tell you a story: Once upon a timea Mann vs. Machine mode in a video game was getting a much-needed update. And so a brave blog post writer (us again) asked the community to submit Mann vs. Machine maps and missions in time for that update. (For the sake of this panic-reducing speculative fantasylet's put the fictional deadline at WednesdayAugust 27th).

If that was the entire storyyou'd already be at a low panic level but vaguely concerned about a looming dystopian future (mission accomplished). But as is traditional in the genre of speculative blog fictionthere's more! The king of the fictional land where this all happened (ancient Greece)decreed on stone tablets that even though the update was dropping right around the ancient Greek candy-harvest festival of Halloweenthe maps did not need to all be Halloween-themed (first tablet) and in fact shouldn't be (second tablet).

"Though some of them COULD be," the king carved into a third tabletheld in the stone hands of a statue... of PRIMATE GEORGE WASHINGTON? No! It's just regular George Washington in a dystopian future past where our sculptors are NOT AS GOOD AS IN ANCIENT GREECE! What an ending! (The end.)

Is this tale a simple flight of grippingwell-written fancy? (No.) Or a chilling glimpse into a future that could arrive as soon asagainWednesdayAugust 27th with a second part arriving right before Halloween? (Yessee paragraph one.)

The TF2 SDK has arrived!

February 182025 - TF2 Team

The TF2 SDK has arrived!

Mod makersrejoice! We've just released a massive update to the Source SDKadding all the Team Fortress 2 client and server game code. This update will allow content creators to build completely new games based on TF2. We're also doing a big update to all our multiplayer back-catalogue Source engine titles (TF2DoD:SHL2:DMCS:Sand HLDM:S)adding 64-bit binary supporta scalable HUD/UIprediction fixesand a lot of other improvements!

Unlike the Steam Workshop or local content modsthis SDK gives mod makers the ability to changeextend or rewrite TF2making anything from small tweaks to complete conversions possible.

The SDK is licensed to users on a non-commercial basismeaning that any mod created using the SDK must be freeand any content in those mods must be free. TF2 mods may be published on the Steam Storeand after publication will appear as new games in the Steam game list.

Players have a lot of investment in their TF2 inventoriesand Steam Workshop contributors have created of a lot of that content. The majority of items in the game now are thanks to the hard work of the TF2 community. To respect thatwe're asking TF2 mod makers continue to respect that connectionand to not make mods that have the purpose of trying to profit off Workshop contributors' efforts. We're hoping that many mods will continue to allow players access their TF2 inventoryif this makes sense for the mod.

Questions? See the Steamworks Source Engine mods FAQ.

A Smissmas Miracle

December 202024 - TF2 Team

Did you know the construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa was one hundred and ninety nine years late? Literally everyone alive when construction started was dead by the time it finished. So unless you're having this read to you from the bad side of a Ouija boardyou made it out the other end of issue seven's historically-speaking-pretty-short seven year delay alive. Which isn't too bad.

Andhonestlywe can think of anothermuch more popular project we're involved with that you're STILL waiting on: The Sagrada Familia in Barcelonawhich began construction in 1886 and still isn't doneand which the Spanish government hired us to write a delay-themed blog post about after seeing an early draft of the blog post you're reading right now.

Speaking of you reading thingswe are veryvery relieved to present Team Fortress Comics issue 7.

AttentionSteam Workshop Creators!

February 92023 - TF2 Team

Steam Workshop Creatorscan we have your attention please. The following message is so urgentso time-sensitivewe made the executive decision to skip TikTok and Twitter entirely and break the glass on the most bleeding-edge communication technology available.

Welcome to the future. Welcome… to a "blog-post".

"Wow!" you're probably thinking. "I forgot how hard reading is!" Yeahit's scary how fast you lose that. Don't worrywe'll be brief:

The last few Team Fortress summer events have only been item updates. But this yearwe're planning on shipping a full-on holiday-sized update — with itemsmapstauntsunusual effectswar paintsand other community-contributed fixes for the game! Which means we need Steam Workshop content! YOUR Steam Workshop content!

So get to work! (Or back to workif you were already working but got distracted when the entire internet simultaneously found out about this state-of-the-art blog-post.) Make sure to get your submissions into the Steam Workshop by May 1stso they can be considered for this as-yet-unnamedun-themedbut still very exciting summer-situated (but not summer-themed) (unless you wanted to develop summer-themed stuff) update.
