Hola:
Me gustaría que me dijeses si se dice "in the north" or "at the north"ya que lo he visto escrito de ambas formas y no sé cuál es correctao hay una diferencia para cada caso. Gracias de antemano. Un saludo :).

    At the North Pole (a point)
    At the west side of the building (possibly outside)
    In the north of England (indicating an area or region)

    I think this is a good answer. I'd say

    1) No other word = in

    He lives in the north/south/east/west.

    2) Also in the north/south/east/west of

    3) With a nountakes the normal preposition the noun takes:

    He works in the building. He works in the west building.
    He works on that side of the building. He works on the west side of the building.
    He works in/at the pole. He works in/at the north pole.
     
    Alsothe difference between "he lives in the north of London" (vive en la parte norte del Londres) and "he lives to the north of London" (vive al norte de Londrespero no dentro de Londres).

    I agree.

    Alsoit's interesting that at least in my experienceSpanish can be ambiguous in this case ("al oeste de España" may be either Badajoz or Portugal). In English you pretty much have to specify.
     
    Its cold in the north. The river is at the north edge of the city.
    He works on the west side of the building. (implies more inside than outside as "at the west side". But this latter could mean his desk is against the west wallor that he is working outside on the west side.)
    There is ice at or on the north pole. He is on the pole (climbing or hanging). The horses are at the pole. The mouse is under the pole. The squirrel is on the pole.
    The boat is in the water or on the river or underwater or at the wharf or above the submarine or on the reef (contact) or over the reef (no contact).
