Hello!!

Which of the two options is the correct one?

- I'll visit you in 2 years time.
- I'll visit you in 2 years' time.

Is the possessive 's necessary?

Thanks!!

  • I have one doubt (my own doubt) about this post: Is it correct to say "in a year of time"? I have heard that in the past.

It would be an odd thng to say. It does not mean the same as in a year's time. As this refers to a specific date - that is 365 days from now.

If it is intended as a unit or a measure of timesay like a minute of timeor an hour of timethen it is a bit clumsy. I would be better to say and more common "in the space of a year".

An adapted version of "Gladiator" uses the following:

In two years time the people will die of hunger.”

Perhapsthere is a trend in writing it that way.

My question iscan we simply use "In two years..."? How about "from two years now"?

(I quote the original question) Another current thread made me search for a WR answer to this this morning. I didn't find it!
I was always taught to use "in two years' time" (and I think I will continue to do so unless anyone enlightens me here) but I know I've read other threads in which the majority did not defend the use of the apostrophe/the possesive/the saxon genitive or whatever terminology you prefer.
Fortuna Felix's post #9 says it all for me.
