Perched high on a rugged hill in the Bavarian AlpsNeuschwanstein Castle is the very definition of a fairytale come to life. With its soaring towersbreathtaking mountain backdropand dreamlike architectureit’s no wonder this castle inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Commissioned by the reclusive King Ludwig II of BavariaNeuschwanstein is a masterpiece of Romanticismblending medieval charm with 19th-century luxury. Todayit stands as one of Germany’s most iconic landmarksdrawing over a million visitors each year.
Neuschwanstein Castle was the ambitious vision of King Ludwig IIwho sought to create a fantastical retreat away from public life. Construction began in 1869but Ludwig’s dream was never fully realized—he died under mysterious circumstances in 1886just days after being declared unfit to rule. The castle was opened to the public shortly after his deathtransforming from a private sanctuary into one of the world’s most visited castles. Insidevisitors can marvel at opulent hallsintricate frescoes depicting Wagnerian legendsand the king’s extravagant Throne Roomthough ironicallyno throne was ever placed there.
