PTA’s latest is damn near incendiary; skewers both the far right and far left. DiCaprio is very funnyperpetually in over his head while often high. Sean Penn gives his best performance in a long time as Steve Lockjawa muscled up army colonel that is a mirror to the current US government. Don’t be surprised if he gets an Oscar nomination for it.

I loved it. DiCaprio and Penn were awesome and I also really liked Chase Infiniti. The cinematography is very goodso is the score/soundtrackand I never really knew where the story would go next. Look forward to seeing it again.

The story is designed around extremes but it cheats to push a particular narrative direction--the "far right" caricature would never have an interracial relationship so having it included is a way of forcing the story into "diversity is strength" territory and to remove any presentation that mass immigration is bad for distinct cultures.
If you look at current movies--there is a certain theme...
The Mandalorian and Grogu---a bounty hunter and an alien kid
Predator -Bad Lands ---a legless android woman and an alien whatever
Avatar-- boring guy abandons his society for some alien blue cats
Embrace the alien.
You aren't complete without it.
I don't recall Othello (or OJ) carrying a torch for the idea very well.

This is your brain on Trump. Another bias is that anti-ICE protests are being funded by outside parties like Soros so that could be added into the story for irony sake. But instead they imply the protests are organic. The conspiracy is a white supremacist cabal.

I think Sean Penn is equally as good in Asphalt City from last yearit is just that his character in One Battle After Another is more interestingly written. He is not a believer in the causehe just desires the power. The rape story he comes up with is comedy gold. His character is wonderfully pathetic. Prior to 2024 though I agree he hasn't had a performance that has stood out much since Fair Game (2010). Then again he hasn't really starred in many movies since the very generic action-thriller The Gunman (2015). Sean Penn is one of my favorite actorsso I am very happy he has been doing more movies recently and really putting in the effort as well. DiCaprio is absolutely the stand-out though imogiving the funniest performance of his career. He feels very natural here. The parts where he is trying to remember the password and getting increasingly angry at the person on the phone is great stuff. His performance in this movie is one of my favorite performances from him.

I’m not going to watch a movie that glorifies domestic terrorists and based on the box office I’m not the only one.

This thing moves unlike any other 2hr 40min movie I’ve ever seen. It’s incredibly impressive what PTA was able to do in that regard.
The story is unpredictable with mostly great characters as well. Penn is so good as the chicken shit villain.
I didn’t like the end and the obvious politics. It’s not obnoxious other than the opening and ending (for the most part)but for a guy like PTA who loves moral ambiguity in his stories and characters he really seemed to enjoy pummeling the political message into our heads.
It’s still extremely well made and a genuine thrill ride.
