我們每日努力工作，費盡心機地投資，為的無非都是賺錢。但錢到底是甚麼？對大多數人而言，錢是日常生活不可分割的一部分，是人們用作計算及儲存價值的工具，亦為商品及服務提供標準的價值衡量尺度；同時是交易媒介，用於個人、企業以至國家的交易活動。
錢與貨幣有甚麼分別？
「錢」和「貨幣」在日常語境中常被交替使用，但要探究其經濟學定義，兩者有不少分別：
- 錢：錢是個抽象概念，可代表支付特定價值的記錄或媒介，例如法定貨幣、銀行存款、黃金、白銀、銀行存款、支票，甚至數碼貨幣等，都是錢不同形式的體現。
- 貨幣：貨幣由政府或獲授權金融機構發行，是法定支付方色的實體，例如美元、港元、歐元及日元等，都是國家或地區的法定貨幣。
貨幣的誕生演變
貨幣在人類歷史中不斷演變。起初人類流行以物易物，但卻因交易不便及局限性，以致後來出現了鹽、牲畜等早期貨幣，並逐步發展成黃金、銀及青銅鑄造等硬幣。而紙幣據說在中國宋代誕生，省卻了攜帶金屬貨幣的麻煩，大大促進了貿易。
起初，貨幣的面額代表換成同等價值的黃金或白銀，故此貨幣的發行數量會受到限制，但隨著美國在1971年結束金本位制度，全球邁向信用貨幣時代，貨幣的價值取決於發行政府的權威與信用，以至貨幣政策、利率、通貨膨脹、資金流向及經濟狀況等多個因素。

港幣小知識
在香港，政府透過金管局授權3家銀行發行銀行紙幣，分別為滙豐銀行、中國銀行（香港）和渣打銀行，並由銀行紙幣都是由香港印鈔有限公司在香港印製；而硬幣則由政府發行。發鈔銀行發行銀行紙幣時，必須按聯繫匯率制度以指定的匯率向外匯基金交出美元；贖回已發行紙幣時也要以相同匯率從外匯基金取回美元。

數碼貨幣與錢的未來新趨勢
近年，數碼銀行服務及加密貨幣急速發展，重新塑造了貨幣的概念。「轉數快」（FPS）及CHATS等電子轉賬交易服務，以及信用卡及電子錢包（如AliPayHK、八達通）等興起，大大加快及簡化資金流動，讓商業及金融服務能全天候運作，同時節省交易成本，並讓更廣泛人口能夠享用金融體系內的服務。
