How to Set Up 2-Step Verification for a Nintendo Account

Learn how to add 2-step verification to your Nintendo Account to create an additional layer of security that can help prevent unauthorized access to the account.

Note: This option is not available for child accounts whose age makes them subject to verifiable parental consent laws.

Complete these steps

  1. Go to the Nintendo Account website and sign in to your Nintendo Account.
  2. Select Sign-in and security settingsthen 2-Step Verificationthen EditEditarModifierEditar.
  3. Click 2-Step Verification setup.
  4. You may be prompted to confirm your identity by re-entering your passwordre-authenticating with your passkeyand/or by verifying your email address.
    • Password entry

      If prompted to enter your passwordenter it then select OK.

    • Passkey re-authentication

      If you have enabled passkey authenticationyou can confirm your identity by signing in using your passkey.

    • Email address verification

      If prompted to verify your email addressselect Submit to have an email with a verification code sent to the email address associated with your Nintendo Account. Locate the code in your email and enter it in the "Verification code" boxthen click Submit.

      • If you do not receive the emailbut you have registered a phone number to your Nintendo Accountselect Use another method to verify your identity on the "E-mail address verification" screenthen Submit. A code will be sent via text message to your phone number—enter it in the "Verification Code" box and select Submit to verify your identity.
      • If you have not registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account (or the verification text message does not arrive) and do not receive the emailplease follow our steps for Did Not Receive a Nintendo Account Identity Verification Email.
  5. Install the Google Authenticator app on your smart device.
    • This is a free app available through Google Play (Android) and the App Store (iOS).
  6. Use the smart device app to scan the QR code displayed on your Nintendo Account screen. A 6-digit verification code will appear on your smart device.
  7. Enter the verification code into the field under step 3 on the Nintendo Account screenthen Submit.
  8. A list of backup codes will appear. Click Copy to copy all the codesthen paste them somewhere safe.
    • A backup code will be required to log in if you don’t have access to the Google Authenticator app. MAKE SURE TO KEEP THESE SOMEWHERE ONLY YOU CAN ACCESS.
    • Each backup code can be used one time each.
  9. Click I have saved the backup codesthen OK.

Additional information

After setting up 2-step verificationyou can return to the 2-step verification settings page if you need to review the backup codes or remove the 2-step restriction.
