Connor McCaffery recently concluded his second season as an assistant coach on Thad Matta's Butler staff.
He is involved in all aspects of the program with an emphasis on player developmentrecruiting and scouting responsibilities. McCaffery helped Butler to a berth in the inaugural College Basketball Crown in 2025. The Bulldogs have won two in-season tournaments -- the 2024 Arizona Tip-Off and the 2025 Greenbrier Tip-Off -- during his time on staff as well.
Michael Ajayi earned both AP All-America honorable mention and All-BIG EAST first team recognition during the 2025-26 seasonsetting a new Butler single-season rebounding record.
McCaffery served as the Basketball Development Coordinator for the Indiana Pacers during the 2023-24 season. That was his first coaching position after his playing career at Iowa concluded. His role involved a number of responsibilitiesincluding running the scout teamassisting with video operations and scouting reportin addition to working out with the active roster. The Pacers advanced to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals in 2024 after improving their regular-season win total to 47 after missing the playoffs the season before.
McCaffery played for his fatherFranat Iowa (Fran is now the head coach at Penn). Connor finished his Iowa career with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.59 (527 assists; 147 turnovers)which is second best in NCAA history. He played in 111 Iowa winstying Jordan Bohannon for most in program history and saw action in 166 games for the Hawkeyesthe second-most in program history. Connor played alongside his brotherPatrickfor a majority of his Iowa career; Patrick was on Butler's 2024-25 roster to utilize his final season of eligibility after graduating from Iowa. Jackthe youngest of the McCaffery brothersjoined the Butler program beginning with the 2025-26 season.
