I've been looking locally for a vintage axe to bring back to life. Southern Ohio seems to have left me with none.
It's a shame as I normally live in SE Michigan and they're easy to find there.

Anywayso I'm left with ordering on Amazon or finding something local. After watching a few youtube videos and landing hereI decided to head to Harbor Freight with my 20% coupon.

$17.11 later and I have the infamous hatchet in my hand.

Current plan is to cut off the polestrip & patina the headcorrect the grind & sharpen and refinish the haft. I had planned to have to rehang the head but this one *seems* well set. I'll address it with a wedge if it loosens.

I MAY undercut the back of the beard slightlywe will see what a job that is.

I think this will make a fun cheap project to keep me entertained away from home.

Above mentioned it was thought to be softdidn't notice it was the o.p.you say probably fine. If it weren't fine I was wondering if anyone has tried to correct it. I haven't heard anything about these axes....are they good steel? Might have to get one if I hear good words.

I modified one into a carving axe. Ended up too heavy but made an excellent camp axe. After a fair amount of useenough to feel comfortable forming an opinionthe heat treat seems to be more than acceptable. Althouth a little late to help @pyzikI would say to cull through thr stack if the store has multiple. They tend to range in thicknesses quite a bit so pick one to suite your intended mods. Overall they are excellent project pieces.

Do you have any pics in a thread?

I went through the 5 they had and got what seemed like the best with close to correct grain orientation. Head fitment was about best too.

A carving axe. That's close to what I want. I do want to undercut the beard a littlelike a choil....

Be careful with how much of the poll you take off. The poll material is there is balance the headin this case it was drawn out to a pick. If you remove the whole thingit could effect the balance in a big way.

Hope the project works out for you!

Already took it off and it definitely changed the balance. My hope is to remove some material to pronounce the beard a little. Its going to be a little work for me.

@pyzik here is a not so greet pic. I did some pretty substantial reshaping. Cut the pollpronounced the beardtook some off the entire topbut the thing that helped the most was bringing the edge back closer to the handle. I rehung it and forced a patina too. It could be made into a great carving axe with a little better planning than my winging it method.

That's very close to what I wanted to do. For winging itI think that looks great!

Thanks man. Keep in mind you can bring the edge closer to the handle since you can see they heat treat line pretty easy. It still has like 4 to 4 1/2" cutting edge.

So..............I'm thinking WITHOUT any mods it would be a great Fatwood Procurement Tool. Will have to snag one.

One of my favorite fatwood tools is a pulaski. This unmodded would be great for it!

I tried to buy one today.....It would be a fun project........I just have too many great axes that are what this one could be if I get lucky. I might do it anyway.

I know what you mean. I have been wanting a cheap gun to do something fun with. I have too many great guns that I can never being myself to buy a crappy gun.

After cutting the pole and playing with itthe balance is pretty off. Looking forward to profiling the head. Just not sure how.

30 minutes of mustard to get some patterning and an hour of vinegar.

Letting it sit with vinegar overnight. I realize I'll have to redo the area I cut but I need to figure that plan out anyway.

Also letting some leather soak in condensed coffee for color. This will wrap the haft below the head and then the handle. Here is soaked vs new.
