Just got a horrible email.

Your Fios TV equipment requires immediate attention.

Hi,
Recent technology advancements now allow us to deliver your
Fios TV service using Internet Protocol (IP) delivery. This is exciting as it allows for a more improved viewing experience and increased flexibility.
What does this mean for you?
Your Fios TV Digital Adapter(s) and/or CableCARD(s) will
no longer work and require an immediate upgrade to avoid a
service interruption.
Action needed:
Please call us today at 1-800-Verizon (1-800-837-4966) to schedule your equipment upgrade at no additional cost to you. This upgrade is essential for you to continue enjoying all your favorite content with Fios TV.
We look forward to hearing from you.

If you no longer use this equipment or have already upgradedplease disregard this message. No further action is required.

They kindly say I don't need to return the equipmentso that means that they are not using any of it elsewhere. But I think it means I have to get their DVRs againand the whole reason I dropped them and went TiVo was that for no valid reason they intentionally do not allow remote viewing via PConly via tablet or phone.

Depending on what devices I am using for other purposesI may want to watch on my PCand last time I checked they said nothat they still don't allow it. Seemed to suggest a copyright issuebut that's nonsense. YESI have software that can screen scrape and record a window on my PC to record programming in a browser or other player. But I knew of and think I have software that lets me play my tablet (screen and audio) on my PCso I still have that. Of course that means I have to tie up both a PC and tablet to watch.

I take it I have no option here? (Don't like Xfinity -- their service was so unreliable I had many outagesversus very few with FIOS.)

I note that they didn't provide a deadline. I wonder if I'll be able to even access my TiVo other than on the TV (for existing recordings). It seems likely they will not be providing Co-Ax access other than from box to TVso there is no internet. HmmI forgetdoes TiVo Edge support WiFi? If so I may be able to use it to play what I have savedbut the only new recordings would be streaming if I can get them on WiFi... and who needs them for thatI can either use a browser or specific app for each service.

And I was being so careful to not make any service changes.

Copyright issues are not “nonsense” and is a perfectly valid reason to not allow recordings to be viewed on a PC. Not to mention the ubiquity of tables and phones make those devices a much more desirable path forward for the majority of customers.

Access to your TiVo on other devices or other TVs won’t be impacted at all.

The Edge supports WIFIas do the previous two generation of models.

TiVo doesn’t record streaming - never has - so without a cablecard you will have zero new recordings.

The point I made was that I can still use something (I think I even have something) to use my tablet from my PCso I could still scrape the screen and record from that. For meI use the PC for TV when I am doing something else on the tablet(s). Sowatching on the PC defeats the purpose of using the PC for TV while working on the tablets. I multitask and with TiVo I can watch TV on any of the devices.

And when I last asked Verizonthey said they still didn't allow you to watch your DVR on the PC (although effectively I still can if it's available on demand... or can be watched on the free app from the network it's on (at least with active cable service)I'm actually not sure if I can watch FIOS free on-demand straight from my PC. For recordingI just did a quick search and there are a number of android apps to record streaming videodidn't dig deeply enough to see if you can do that with a piece of the screen so you don't record the player and/or rest of the screen. But I'm sure there are some. Not planning itjust pointing out why I called the PC restriction nonsense -- it doesn't prevent recording it.

Still upset that while I preserved my plan knowing that any change would cost me the cable cardthey're now forcing the change.

Note: I bought 2 TiVo Edges when SlingBox shut down their service. Before that I watched my FIOS DVRs on whatever device I wanted -- PCtablet or phone (phone I used when not at home).

I got the same letter. I'm going to ignore itfor now.
Taking any actual action is probably prematurealthough researching and thinking about your alternatives might be appropriate (stay with FiOS-TVor go to another streameror go OTA onlyor ....). There are various discussion topics/threads on this board where others have discussed the pros/cons of the various alternatives. You may want to review (and participate in) them.

Any guesses as to the.shut off date.
Some CSRs have suggested 90 days. Other CSRs apparently can't find a specific date in order to share it. If the plan is real (and not just an encouragement to migrate)April 1st 2026 somehow seems appropriate.

I'm in Northern VA and got the same email today. I guess we'll be losing TiVo and will dump the Verizon we have been incredibly overpaying for to keep our TiVos for all these years.

#10 ·
That would be a perfect reaction. I only wish TiVo had made a bigger splash and we could have everyone using TiVo abandon Verizon. Sadlyeven if all didit wouldn't make much difference.

I'll prob'ly stay and start paying again for two DVRs. It's not like TiVo worked wellit had a lot of issues I knew they'd never fix (tried with somethey supposedly opened enhancement requests). Biggest downside is I likely lose the ability to watch on my PC without also tying up a tablet. If I delay a day I can watch some of it on free streaming and/or FIOS on demand.

If you read the letter closelythey mention a digital adapter. That is not the same as an STB (Set Top Box). Soeven though the Digital Adapter and CableCARD will not work when QAM is shut downtheir current STBs will.
Your Fios TV Digital Adapter(s) and/or CableCARD(s) will
no longer work and require an immediate upgrade to avoid a
service interruption.
It looks to me like they want to make sure you have an STB capable of IP TV. I did NOT get a letterbut I received an STB as a part of my package that can do IP or QAM (even though I only use TiVo). I have a Family member who also received a similar notice about a Month ago or so and they switched in a new STB plus a new Routerand she does not have a TiVo. They left her ONT in place and I think she still has the slowest Internet of 75/75 which is not available to new customers. SoI think this is what is going onis that they are preparing for the cut-overwhich they have been doing for a few years now.

These are a few quotes around a year ago from the old DSLReports forum from an insider. Sounds very similar to what is going on. If he is correctwe still have a ways to go time frame wise.

Per HUBadubBUB
RE: VMS4100ATV's:"Yeswe just started sending them out as you stated. Once VIP (Video IP) is launched in your areayou will be able to drop the QAM coax connectionand cable up with an Ethernet cable. Look for your area in an announcement indicating your outside plant is GPON 2 ready. "
Per HUBadubBUB:
"They want off legacy RF yesterday… I do believe it is a new ONT due to the increased throughput as well as coax for RF elimination (which will make this a long slow rollout of VIP in my opinion)."
Per HUBadubBUB:
"The main power hog in all current Fios equipment is MoCA. The MoCA chipsets use a ton of power and generate a majority of the heat. Once MoCA is out of the networkthe power usage will drop."
Per HUBadubBUB: Re: Verizon getting out of the TV business 9/6/24
"A large percentage of the 2.8 million subscriber loss occurred when we sold LADallas and Tampa propers to Frontier Communications. Frontier has exited QAM delivery so if the Frontier sale is approvedVIP it is. But yeswe are losing between 60-80K a quarter with QAM customers. It’s a slow bleed. QAM and VIP will operate in parallel for some time… but just in time for my retirement.. God willing.lol"

Yes. Isn’t that obvious?

They want all customers to be future proof so they don’t wake up one day with no tv service (after QAM is shut down).

I don’t see anything in those quotes you provided to indicate any sort of timeframe.

To methe fact that the emails are being sent is a much better indicator.

Please be more specific on where in Maryland (county/ general city areaetc.) -- Verizon has multiple franchises in Maryland and while eventually this will happen everywheresome people haven't yet been seeing these notices while others have. It is very helpful to know where/when these shutdowns may be happening so people can plan on when they might expect the same notices themselves.

Same holds for other states too though -- saying "I live in New Jersey and just got notice...." doesn't help neighbors/friends that need to know you are talking about 'near Philly' or 'Atlantic City area' and such.

Just trying to help others here that are worried about eventually seeing the same news themselves :(

Are they really installing DVRs? I was told that the only boxes they have now are interfaces to web DVRswith 100 or 200 hours of recording total. (The real DVRs I used to have may have had the same capacitybut by recording SD it held lots more. This is 100/200 hoursSDHD or whatever they call the next level up.)

So the STBs can get streaming over IP (including "live" broadcasts)but to get from the DVRone interface box services all the STBs by your TV... and the DVR didn't connect to a TV. Maybe in your area they still have local storage.

I'm on south Jersey just outside of Philadelphia.

It’s marketing BS.

Fios and other companies have been sending those letters for well over a year.

They are required by law and your service agreement to notify you in writing with SPECIFICS before changes to your service.

This is not that.

They want you to switch now because a) it’s better for them and b) to avoid you having to potentially switch in a “short” (60-90 days) amount of time.

There is zero reason you need to act now unless you want to.

I don't like that "immediate upgrade to avoid a service interruption". Especially since even if they start it nowI think/hope it will take at least a year to complete itwhich will allow me to set it up when I have free time at the end of the year.

It is an attempt to convince you to migrate now. Marketing loves to generate FUD in consumers to convince them to spend money now. Some customers are easily manipulated. The smarter ones wait for the snail mail letter that includes an actual drop-dead date (and then knows the engineers are unlikely to actually pull the plug at that exact moment).

If I recall correctlythe first step will be to get the new boxes. The ONT can remain for now; it MAY have to be replaced at some pointbut with 1G serviceI think it's good for now. I can then run TiVo and FIOS in parallel while I attempt to set up my season passes (I have only a few over 200)and of course that can take months as you can't set them up in advance. Once the FIOS boxes are workingI'll likely do a trial of DirectTV in parallel with FIOS. And possibly at some pointif they ever get to meI might run T-Mobile fiber in parallel with FIOS (2G T-Mobilekeep FIOS for a bit as a backup until I see how reliable T-Mobile is).

Verizon is advancing themselves out of my $200+ bill with this money grab. (Oh BTWI won't be getting FIOS 2G; that requires a new ONT and a $150 charge for that; T-Mobileif they ever get hereinstalls for free.)

There are so many reasons for concern with this.....
1- All video will now be sent to desktop boxes exclusively over WiFi in the home. If your WiFi doesn't meet minimum requirementsyou will get reduced quality or no picture at all.
2- High definition video requires a lot of internet and WiFi bandwidtheating into your other internet needs. This means that we will require additional bandwidth necessary for HD television (1080)paying more for itand taxing our WiFi bandwidth as well. What about 4k TV?
3- We no longer have the option of choosing to use a router other than Verizon's. I have built my own network for my home based business that includes security measures and other features not supported by Verizon's WiFi router. This includes not giving Verizon free access to my router settingsinternet historyand analytical data.

Having been a FIOS customer for many decadesI will cancel my TV and phone service as soon as my cable card stops working.

Just got the notice others have been receiving - in Washington DC.

Somewhat heartened to hear it’s likely not too immediate. But I guess I need to get serious about other options. I’ll probably drop cable altogetherdrop to just internet and stream what we need.

I work for an independent OSP contractor in the DFW area and my company does some work for Frontier who bought and operate the former FIOS infrastructure down hereso we still have former FIOS techs and people who know people who still work on the FIOS footprint up in the northeast where they mainly still operateand they tell me from what they've heard FIOS is rolling this out in 2 phasesone set to be completed by June/July of this yearand the other June/July 2027with last mile impact closer to the end of those dates. So this is one of those "friend of a friend told me" type dealsbut according to themif you have a Fios Cable Card nowit's either going to stop working by June/July this yearand if it is still working after thatyou will get another year and then stop working in June/July of next year.

Full disclosure I do not have FIOS/Frontier myself and have not spoken directly to anyone who works at FIOSthis is purely what I have heard through the grapevineit could be 100% trueit could be 0% trueor anywhere in betweenand even if true today it could be changed tommorow. The only thing I can vouch for is that rolling out large network upgrades in a Metro > OSP > Last Mile for 1/2 your footprintwait 6 monthsMetro > OSP > Last Mile for the rest of the footprint is pretty common so it ould make sense if they do it that way
