Requirements for Purchasing a Firearm in Washington State

Regardless of the type of firearm you wish you purchaseall state and federal requirements must be met.

• You must be purchasing the firearm for yourself. Purchasing a firearm for another person (also called a straw purchase) is a felony offense.
• You must meet the age requirement for the type of firearm being purchased.
• You must bring the proper credentials with you to purchase the firearm (see below).
• You must pass the background check(s).
• You must meet Washington State's training requirement.

Age Requirements by Firearm Type

• Bolt action rifleslever action riflesand shotguns: 18 years old
• Pistol grip firearms (PGF'sor shotguns with a pistol grip instead of a buttstock): 21 years old
• Pistolssemi-automatic rifles: 21 years old

Training Requirement for Purchasing a Firearm

As per Washington State House Bill 1143you must complete an approved Washington State Firearms Safety Training course prior to purchasing any firearm.

Prohibited Persons

The Gun Control Act (GCA)codified at 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)makes it unlawful for certain categories of persons to shiptransportreceiveor possess firearms or ammunitionincluding any person:

• Convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year;  
  who is a fugitive from justice;
• Who is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance (as defined in section 102 of the Controlled Substances Actcodified at 21 U.S.C. § 802);
• Who has been adjudicated as a mentally defective or has been committed to any mental institution;
• Who is an illegal alien;
• Who has been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions;
• Who has renounced his or her United States citizenship;
• Who is subject to a court order restraining the person from harassingstalkingor threatening an intimate partner or child of the intimate partner; or
• Who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
• Who is under indictment for a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year (felony).

• Trade In - This approach will normally net you the most money for your gun towards a new gun and will also save you the sales tax on the trade value.  
   

Estate Sales

West Coast Armory provides estate appraisal services for a fee based on the research required. It can take time and skill to place a value on antique and older used guns. The value placed on the estate is similar to the Blue Book Value of carsretailand insurance value will vary by 30% from a cash offer value.
