Cardiology

Cardiovascular disease represents a major burden of health in our society. The cardiovascular program at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) provides multi-disciplinary integrated carefrom primary to quaternary levels. The MUHC Cardiology division serves patients of both the Montreal General Hospital (MGH) and Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) and acts as a referral service for all McGill-affiliated teaching hospitals. The McGill RUIScovering a large part of Quebecis also served by the MUHC cardiology division.

The division provides complexadvanced care for the province of Quebec in such areas as:

  • congenital heart disease
  • mechanical hearts
  • heart and multi-organ transplantation

In the MUHC hospitalsthe division provides support for the Emergency Departmentthe MedicalSurgical and Women’s Missionsas well as the Trauma Program and Intensive Care Units.

Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CICU)

The CICU team is responsible for providing emergencyadvancedcardiac life support. The Cardiology Division is an integral part of the Cardiac SurgeryVascular and Medical programs of the MUHCwhich together constitute the Cardiovascular Sciences Program.

Heart Failure Program

The heart failure program is a large referral centre for all of Quebec. Cardiology offers the most advancedend-stage heart failure therapies in the province and is the only centre to offer combined heart and other solid organ transplants.

Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

The cardiac catheterization laboratory is at the core of hospital-based complex cardiology. It provides advanced imaging and hemodynamic diagnostic equipment in all categories of cardiac disease for advanced therapeutic treatments. The laboratory facilities also support traditional open-heart surgeryas well as advanced mechanical heart support for acutely failing hearts.

Cardiovascular imaging

Advanced cardiovascular imaging is provided in collaboration with the Department of Diagnostic Imaging.

Clinics

Specialized clinics in congenital heart diseaseheart failureelectrophysiologyand cardiovascular genetics provide the MUHC patients with access to world-class expertise and state-of-the-art technologies.

The Cardiovascular Prevention Centre (CPC) helps people who are living with or concerned about heart disease.

The MAUDE Unitdedicated to congenital heart disease (CHD)provides care in cardiac surgerycardiac interventionvalvular heart disease and transplantation. The unit's integration of medicine and obstetrics allows it to monitor patients from infancy onward. A cornerstone of its success is the provincial CHD database of more than 71,000 patientsdating from 1983. The multidisciplinary team at the MAUDE Unit cares for about 500 patients.

Percutaneous Aortic Valve Implantation – one of many state-of-the-art cardiac procedures performed at the MAUDE Unit – involves the replacement of worn-out heart valves using a non-invasive technique. The entire procedureconducted via a blood vessel in the legavoids the need for potentially risky open-heart surgery. The MAUDE Unitwhich was created in 2000is one of only a few clinics in North America capable of performing this complex procedure.

Referrals

When external hospitals and physicians refer patients to the catheterization laboratorythey ensure a streamlined process in elective and emergency situationsincluding:

  • direct consultation with an experienced interventional cardiologist
  • access to all diagnostic and conventional surgical interventions
  • surgical referral when indicated
