Y'all remember a couple months ago when I snatched that MASSIVE palmetto inflourecenseand it was full of seed weevils? And I stuck it in the freezer for way too long? Welp I thawed it. And soaked them in water and extra peroxide. I knew there was gonna be some funk involved. I scooped off the floaters from the top. The water turned black. I don't know if it's the peroxide killing the funkor extra funkbut there's.... Let's just say these don't smell pleasantit's a peroxide and vinegar stink. These are not rare high demand plants but I wouldn't mind growing another 20 or 30 but I ain't gonna lie. I don't wanna clean them but I also don't want community …

Jacksonville palms 9a/b 1 2

Hey fellow palm enthusiastsI just became a first time home owner and am looking to plant some palms in my yard. I live in a 9a/b area in southwest Jacksonville FL. This being said I really wanted some coconut palms for their fruit and tropical lookhoweverI heard they are near impossible to keep alive up here. I may still try coconuts from seed(less costs if loss) in a pot that I can move indoors during cold snaps(40 degrees and lower) then outdoors all other days. Outside of the coconutI am intrigued by the royal and king palms as a possible option for planting. I am aware that they are still zone pushing so I'd make sure they are planted on a south facing f…

Areca Palm Hedge in Orlando
by sacts- 6 replies
I currently have a podocarpus hedge on the side of my yard that is too close to my pool and I have plenty of room to create a new hedge farther out. I really like the look of Areca palms and I have a couple in my yard that do well. With that saidI've been told that a cold spell could kill the hedge if I were to use areca palms. Anyone have any experience with an Areca hedge in the Orlando area?

Almost 20 years ago I escaped the frozen tundra of Michigan and moved into the sauna of NW Orlando. It's hard to describe the abrupt transitionbut I was pretty sure that I moved into an oven. Despite the oppressive heat and humidity in the summerit was far better than spending September-April indoors and never seeing the sun! I lucked out when I movedas I bought very cheap just before a huge price jump in the Orlando housing market. I found a nice house on about 3/4 acre of land with a great looking canopy of about 40 big oaks and a few pines. What I did *not* luck out on is my ignorance of southern oak trees. I didn't know that they were *not* the typical…

Say hello to my little friendpurchased from @Darold Petty just before Christmas. It was gorgeous todayI think all over Californiaso we did a little garden cleanup. This got me to thinking about where I intend to put this plantprobably in mid to late February. I have two spotsclose together but quite different. Here’s the overall view. One location is where the Cycas is currently. It has never done wellI think due to scalebut is looking better lately. Still I would not hesitate to move or remove it. This location gets plenty of sun spring through fallI’m concerned maybe too much. Eventually there will be more canopy but this will take year…

Today wandering the garden as I often do while taking a break from work I noticed that my Beccariophoenix madagascariensis seems to be starting to put on a little size. I can’t remember exactly when I planted it. It’s been about 6 years I would guess. It was a small 5 gallon. Over those years it has consistently put out new leafsbut it never really seemed to get too much bigger. While still considered smallit seems to finally be putting on some size. 5 gallon bucket in 2nd pic for scale. So what palm in your garden caught your eye today? It doesn’t have to be your favoritejust something that stuck out to you today.

I noticed the other day that my Hyphaene compressa has decided to branch. As with the other hyphaenesthey all branched at the ground level - none have branched above ground. I cut off all of the ground level branches so it grew faster. It is now over 20' tall and has decided now to branch - a first for my hyphaenes! I've included a photo of it. BTWit has not flowered as yet - so no idea whether male or female. Right in the center of the photo you will notice 2 petioles next to each other. I'll try to post another photo next year when it is more noticeable. rod phoenix
