To truly shineSonoFlow need some equalization and ANC turned on. Then is where their sound quality becomes quite enjoyableespecially for the price of under $100.

Headphones have modest padding that doesn’t look too confident at first glance. Howeverdue to the very lightweight constructionyou barely feel them on your head.

Overallthe construction is pretty good and comparable to similarly priced headphones. One thing to be aware of is that you can’t replace the earpads once they wear off.

On the positive sideheadphones support LDAC Bluetooth codec and the 1MORE Music app for additional customization.

Moreoverthe battery life is outstanding at 61.5 hours on a single charge in our test (more in the review).

    How We Tested

We objectively test headphones by measuring frequency responsenoise isolationeffectiveness of active noise cancellation (altogetherwe test them on 9 key points)but there is no way to objectively test comfort.

The only objective measurement we can take is weight. And weight doesn’t tell the whole story.

Testing for comfort is the hardest part of reviewing headphones. Everybody has a different head. This is why we combined our “head-on” experience with user feedback for optimal evaluation.

Sowhile all headphones don’t fit the same way on all headsthe odds are our recommendations are going to be comfortable for most people.

See our testing and scoring methodology.

How did we choose the models?

As mentioned abovewe primarily focused on 2 decision points: comfort and fit. More specificallywe looked at:

    • The feeling of wearing the headphones
    • Stability during head movement
    • The thickness of the earpad and headband padding
    • And weight

The recommended headphones have features that make them more comfortable than alternatives in their category. But that doesn’t mean they’re perfect. Read our reviews for more info.

These are the models we tested and most people claim to be very comfortable for them. So they’re more likely to be cozy for everyone else as well. It’s not a specific rule but more of general guidance.

The way we ranked them is from the most expensive to more affordable towards the bottomand for different use cases in between.

How Can I Know What Comfortable Headphones Are?

We all have different head shapes and sizesso there’s no other way to know unless you try them.

Theoreticallyyou could visit your local tech store and try a lot of different headphonesbut that’s not realistic since we all have busy lives. You will just have to make a decisionand the best is an educated decision.

    Here’s quick advice:

    • If you have a big headtry looking for bigger frames. Bigger headphones are less likely to have overly strong clamp force. Get over-ears instead of on-earswhich have smaller headbands.
    • Biggerover-ear earpads with thick padding: Sureheadphones can be comfy even without excessive padding. But if you can’t try them by yourself and you have to pick one based on picturesthis is a good indicator of comfort.
    • Lighter is better: This also means more plastic and less metal parts.
    • Replaceable cushions/earpads: Pads play a big role in comfort. If you can replace them when they get oldthat’s a big plus.

Here are more guides on comfort:

Which Type of Headphones is The Most Comfortable?

The headphone design plays a big role. In our opinionthese are the most comfortable designs:

Over-ear: These have the biggest cups and are sometimes heavybut they make up to it with lots of cushioning and big frames that fit even the biggest and most unusual head sizes. You can wear them for hours on end without any discomfort. Many high-end over-ear headphones offer the option of changing earpadswhich improves comfort and longevity. This is the standard and most comfortable overall headphone design.

In-ear: Or earbudsas they’re also knownare the smallest headphonesand that’s their advantage. Due to their small size and weightthey’re easy to put in your ear canal and forget about. The in-ear model’s comfort can be adjusted by changing the ear tips. Since there are many sizes and shapes of ear tips as well as different materials (foam)you can really adjust the fit. For most peoplefoam eartips offer the best comfort as well as a secure fit. Bluetooth earbuds are the best since they lack wires.

Check the most comfortable earbuds here.

On-ear: These are the smaller brothers of over-ear headphones. The cups and ear pads are smaller to fit on the ears instead of over the earshence the name. While most on-ear headphones can be very comfortable for hoursif they have quality cushioningthey do get slightly uncomfortable after many hourswhich is their biggest problem. For all-day-wearingover-ear or in-ear might be a great all-around choice for comfort. This is not a fact for all on-ear headphones but more of a general rule. Keep that in mind when buying a pair of headphones.

    FAQs:

Which type of headphones are most comfortable?

Generallythe most comfortable types of headphones are: over-earopen-earin-earon-ear. But anybody can find comfortable and uncomfortable headphones of each type. Soit’s more important you get the right model instead.

Which headphones are more comfortable on-ear or over-ear?

Over-ear headphones are generally more comfortable. Due to bigger earcupsthicker earpadsand larger frameover-ears tend to be more comfortable to more people.

How do you wear headphones so that your ears don’t hurt?

You wear headphones so that ears don’t hurt by making sure the earcups are big enough and don’t touch your ears. The clamping force isn’t too strong for your head size and earpads are thick enough so the headphones don’t touch the skin.

    Are open headphones more comfortable?

Open-back headphones are equally comfortable as closed-back. Open-ear headphones are among the most comfortablebut some produce pain in the earlobesso finding the right model is important.

    Do over-ear headphones cause earwax?

Over-ear headphones don’t cause earwax because they don’t touch your ear canal at all. The drivers are away from your ears and have no impact on ear wax accumulation. In-ear headphones are a different story since you insert them into your ears.

What headphones are comfortable in bed?

Smaller in-ear headphones are the most comfortable for sleeping in bed because they allow you to lie down on the side. Bigger on-ear and over-ear headphones are only suitable for bed if you sleep on your back at all times.

    Conclusion

Of all 193 headphones we testedApple AirPods Max are our #1 recommendation for long-lasting comfort.

      1. Hi drierheart 17,
I don’t have personal experience with Beats headphonesespecially not with the new Studio Prosbut they seem like they should be pretty comfy. Keep in mind that they use pleather earpadswhich don’t provide much air circulation. Consequentlyyou’ll get sweaty ears after an hour of listening. 😉
