U.S. Senate
Ranked 5th in seniorityDick Durbin is retiring from the Senate after five terms. This rare vacancy drew three high-profile hopefuls among the ten candidates on the Democratic ballot.
- Robin Kelly - U.S. Rep. 2nd District
- Raja Krishnamoorthi - U.S. Rep. 8th District
- Julia Stratton - Lieutenant Governor
Although independent public polling has been scarceit appears either Krishnamoorthi or Stratton will be the nominee. While Kelly is likely to finish thirdher level of support among Black voters may spell the difference in this primary.
Both Stratton and Kelly are Blackwith Kelly having the endorsement of the Congressional Black Caucus. Meanwhile, Gov. J.B. Pritzker has strongly backed his Lieutenant Governor. How Stratton does may provide an early test for the governor's influence has he moves toward a 2028 presidential run.
Six Republicans are competing to be a nominee who will face long odds in the general election. They are not well known: a January Emerson College poll found 84% undecided. Based on fundraising and endorsementsthe frontrunner is probably Don Tracymost recently chair of the Illinois GOP.

Attorney General
Democrat Kwame Raoul is seeking a third term. Both he and Republican Robert Fioretti have uncontested primaries.
Secretary of State
Democrat Alexi Giannoulias is unopposed for renomination as he seeks a second term.
Walter Adamczyk and Diane Harris are competing for the Republican nomination.
U.S. House
Five Chicago-area Democrats are retiring or running for U.S. Senate. These districts are all safely blueso winning the Democratic primary is tantamount to winning the general election. As suchthe four contests discussed below have all drawn large fields. Since there are no runoffs in Illinoisit is possible some of these may yield a plurality nominee with 30% or less of the vote.

Jan Schakowsky is retiring after 14 terms. There are 15 candidates on the ballot. This appears to be a three-way battle between Evanston Mayor Daniel Bisssocial media journalist Kat Abughazalehand state Sen. Laura Fine. |
Davis and Schakowsky are the longest-tenured members of the delegation.
The fifth retirement is in IL-04where Jesus "Chuy" Garcia is retiring after four terms. He announced his retirement after the filing deadline - but before ballot certification - to allow his anointed successor to succeed him with no primary competition. Patty Garciathe incumbent's Chief of Stafffiled just before the deadline. The House formally rebuked "Chuy" Garcia for this maneuver. While they share a surnamethe two are not related.
