Development

[edit | edit source]

While it initially started out as a primarily independent effortHussie has collaborated with and reached out to community members (primarily in the MSPA forums) for musicartand programming contributions to the comicprimarily for [S] pages and panels drawn by other artists.

3 days prior to the official launch of HomestuckHussie also made a "Beta" version of Homestuckwhich used panels solely drawn in Flashthough it was scrapped after 8 pages.

On their now-archived blogHussie was asked when they came around to the first defined concept of Homestuckand stated that during their last few months of working on Problem Sleuth (his previous MSPA)they pictured "A kid playing a game in his roomwhile another player manipulated his roomthe way you edit an environment in The Sims." and designed all four characters before starting the comic.[2]

Early in its lifespanthe comic updated regularlyusually releasing new panels daily. Howeveras time went on and the comic's visual and narrative complexity grewlonger hiatuses were placed in between updatesespecially for large flashes that required lots of collaborationsuch as [S] Cascade.[3]

Homestuck panels are typically drawn in Adobe Photoshop[4]and are published in .gif format. Animations are made in Adobe Flash. The comic has a fairly rough art in order to maintain the speed and efficiency of updating it daily.

On April 1320167 years after the comic's initial releasethe comic ended with Act 7and a credits page following shortly afterwards. In April 132019Hussie released the Homestuck Epiloguesa two-part continuation of the story picking up years after the original comic's endingmarked as "Dubious Canon".
