It wasn't her son's death that shocked people most.

A bus robbery in Guatemala drew international attention not only because one of the suspects was killedbut because of what his grieving mother said afterward.

According to local reportsJosué "Tortolita" García and his alleged accompliceAlfredo Barillas Herreraboarded a bus traveling from Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa in Escuintla to the Central de Mayoreo in Guatemala City. After reportedly announcing a robberyan armed passenger opened fire.

García died inside the buswhile Barillas Herrera was shot in the leg. He managed to get off the vehicle but was quickly caught by officers from Guatemala's National Civil Police after injuring his ankle while trying to escape.

When García's mother arrived at the sceneshe broke down in tears and pleaded for justice. In remarks that quickly spread across social mediashe said"My son got up early to rob buseslike alwaysbut they killed him. He didn't shoot anyonehe only robbed them."

Her emotional statement sparked intense debate online. While many sympathized with the pain of a mother losing her childothers pointed out that the robbery itself had put innocent passengers in danger. Authorities also reported that García had a long criminal record involving robberydrug-related offensesand extortionand that he and his alleged accomplice were carrying .38-caliber firearms loaded with ammunition.

The incident has continued to divide opinion years laterraising difficult questions about griefaccountabilityand how people react when tragedy strikes someone who spent years on the wrong side of the law.
