I understand that there have been a number of cancellations due to the weather but I have not seen anything official yet. Maybe I haven't looked in the right place.

I understand that 4(3)21(5)22(4) have been cancelled. Also some editions of the Cardinal and the City of New Orleans. Corrections and additional information would be welcome.

Stuck on the Eastbound Empire Builder 28/8 East of Fargo since around 6am but the staff and crew has been amazing with communication and very helpfull.

Lucky I am in a bedroom and just decided to take a nap while we wait for a new crew since the last crew went over on hours.

As I am typing this we just started moving at 12:01pm

A big problem for both the RRs and Amtrak is the ability to get crew to the relief points. Too many governments close traffic to all but essential personnel. T & E RR crews do not qualify as essential. As well persons desiring to travel cannot get to be essential. I cannot imagine getting off a train at say Cumberland MD at a station with no shelter not having anyone allowed to drive to pick me up.

I do believe that HOS rules need some tweaking especially for passenger trains. That may include for T & E to allow for off duty when on your assigned job. ACs can certainly be rotated. Maybe time for some cross trained to be an engineer or maybe a second engineer that can take off duty time??

Saturday Night (1/4) the Lake Shore Limited and Floridian both departed Chicago extremely late. The Floridian almost literally at least from Chicago to South Bend ran on the Lake Shore's schedule. It left Chicago at 9:36pm and arrived in South Bend at 12:02am.

I was ticketed on the Lake Shore (on a quick trip home to South Bend from Chicago). For these trips I'll often buy a refundable Amtrak ticket low-bucket for the comfort and general speed on the ride home compared to the South Shore Line. I decided day of how I'm feeling. There was a moment that I thought I might be on the previous 6:49pm train.

The first train will leave late notifications first came around 2:00pm CTthen at 3:05pm CT I got a robocall (that i missed) and email saying "Please be advised Chicago is currently without internet accessno ticketing services are available. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for choosing Amtrak."

Needless to say the appeal of a super delayed Amtrak train when I have the South Shore Line as an alternative is a non-starter. My 9:20pm South Shore Line ride was uneventful we got in about 5 minutes late which is normal for this train. Travel time was 2 hours and 10 minutes. Amtrak is amazing when it works at just 90I will never take it on the to Chicago legit's just too unreliable.

I'm going to Washington for a conference this weekand I reserved a seat on NER 67 from Baltimore to Washington for Monday morning. On SaturdayI got a textemailand phone call from Amtrak saying the trip was cancelled. This was when the forecast called for 1- 3 inches of snow. MARC is still planning regular servicethough I expect that this evening they will announce they're going on the snow scheduleas the Weather Service is now forecasting 5-9 inches. Should be funI need to go downstairs to make sure the snow shovels and salt ore readily available. The drive to Penn Station should be fun.

8(2) was terminated at St. Paul with bustitution to Chicago.
The word is that all three Amtrak enginesa Siemans Charger in the lead and two P42sfailed at Fargo. The Charger was eventually restarted and was able to provide heat but no traction.

Perhaps BNSF will require Amtrak to run 7 & 8 with four engines this winter.

Cardinal 51 was cancelled this morning. It showed a few minutes late out of Cincinnati on asm.transitdocs earlier. We were notified of the cancelation via email after we arrived to the IND station. Still no text notification. The ticket on the Amtrak still shows an online departure out of IND. Very weird.

It’s not “cancelled” but looks like all passengersincluding ones waiting at stations are being bused between CIN & CHI

A big problem right now is the unreliability of locos. If 3 fail and only one able to just provide HEP that is not good. If a train is stalled without any hope of help for 24 hours would the loco(s) run out of HEP fuel? These storms are also bringing down a lot of trees that can severely damage a loco in a collision. If a tree stops a train in a forest area and the train cannot back up quickly enough what happens if another tree smashes a passenger car taking out the HEP?

This tree situation is much worse now since trees are no longer removed. They are no longer threat since RRs have removed code lines and telegraph lines.

Now Amtrak could refuse to drop passengers at unmanned stations that are hazardous such as Mt Joy PA,

The Siemens "Charger" seems to be the culpritand their "Innovative Locomotives" blurb is a sick joke. This country ran EMD and GE locomotives for years after Amtrak started with nowhere near the mechanical issues apparently. A suit should be filed. In the meantimefive to six inches of snow and the cancellations start flying. In the early days of AmtrakI was on the "North Coast Hiawatha" in a blizzard and it ran almost on time. Same for the "Coast Starlight" in the Cascades. I would also wager that the contracting railroads' snow removal equipment might not be as numerous as it was back then. In any eventthe traveling public suffers and many vow never to take a train again.
