The Windows in Arches National Park: A Complete Hiking Guide for 2026

You’ve come to the right place! We have spent months traveling around Southern Utahenjoying as many hiking trails as we canand The Windows in Arches is one of our favorites. With our experiencewe’ve put together a guide with helpful tips and details to help you plan for and best enjoy your time in The Windows.

If you are looking to see a lot of arches and cool formations without a lot of hikingthe Windows in Arches National Park is a great place to visit. During our last visit to Moabwe hiked this section just as the sun was going down in the late afternoonand it was so pretty!

We consider this to be one of the most scenic parts of the park and one of our favorite things to do in Moab. It isn’t as spectacular as Delicate Archbut you get way more bang for your buckespecially considering how easy the trail is.

This section of the park is about two square miles and is home to many notable features like the North WindowTurret ArchNose Bridgeand Double Arch. Some other things to see along the trail are the Garden of EdenElephant ButteDuck on the Rockand the Parade of Elephants.

Where are the Windows in Arches National Park?

Arches National Park is about five miles north of downtown Moab on US-191. There are lots of signs around town directing you to Archesand your GPS navigation on your phone should direct you to the national park without any problems.

There is a large parking lot about 12 miles from the entrance to Arches National Park. After passing Balanced Rocktake your next right to the Windows section of the park. The windows road will dead end after 2.7 miles at the parking lot for the Windows Trail.

In the parking lotthere are toiletsbut no drinking waterso make sure you bring enough water with you. We were hoping to eat dinner at a picnic area herebut there wasn’t one.

If the parking area for the North and South Window Arches is fullyou can park down closer to the Double Arch trailhead and take the short walk up to the Windows Trailhead. There are also larger RV parking spots in the lower lot.

Accessibility at the Windows

If you are looking for accessibility at the Windows trailthe first 100 yards or so is a flat and hard-packed trail. This section of the trail is considered “barrier-free.” This will not get you up to the windowsbut it will give you a look from a distance.

After these 100 yardsthe trail is very uneven and has some stone steps and slight elevation gain. It is not overly difficult to navigate but would not be suitable for a wheelchair or stroller.

What to Expect on the Trail

This is not an overly difficult trail and has little elevation gain. There are some rocky steps to go overbut they aren’t too bad. We hiked this with our three-year-oldand she was able to do most of this hike by herself.

Along the trailthere are four main arches to see. There are many other smaller archesand fun rock formationsso keep an eye out. To get to the base of each archyou will need to take a short detour leading to the basewhere you can take pictures and admire the arches.

Notable Features on the Windows Arches National Park Trail

The Windows

This is the section that the trail is named after. These two windows were formed from the same sandstone fin below Elephant Buttethe highest point in Arches National Park. The Windowsalso known as “The Spectacles” due to their resemblance to glassesare a really pretty section of this hike and the most popular thing to see.

You can easily stand under the large South Window to take pictures and enjoy the views. There is also a really cool hike that goes around the back of the windows sectionwhich is a very popular place to take pictures from. A very popular picture is taken from the backside of the North Window looking through at Turret Arch.

North Window Arch

From the parking lot for the Windows areathe first arch you will get to is the North Window Arch. It is about 1/10 of a mile from the trailhead. There is a large step staircase that will lead you to the base of the arch.

From the basethere is a great view of Arches National Parkthe La Sal Mountainsand the Turret Arch. This window is 51 feet high and 92 feet wide.

South Window Arch

From the North Windowyou will take a short spurt going to the left to reach the base of the South Window Arch in Moab. This arch is higher than the trailso you may need to do a little walking if you want to be at the base. Remember to stay on the trail.

The South Window is the third largest arch in the park. It is 105 feet long and 65 feet high.

Turret Arch

From the South Window in Arches National Parkyou can continue clockwisewhich will loop you around to Turret Arch. This arch is about 64 feet high and 39 feet wide and resembles a keyhole. Turret Arch is also referred to as the “kneeling camel” and “jailhouse.”

If you look to the right of this main archyou can see another smaller arch which will eventually form to create one larger arch. This second arch makes Turret Arch a double arch.

This is the smaller arch near the Windows section of the trail. This is a fun place to explore and take pictures. To get to Turret Archyou will need to take a short detour off the main trail. After checking outTurret Archthe Arch Windows trail will continue to loop around and will take you back to the trailhead.

You can also opt to hike back on the primitive loop trail. This provides a different perspective to see the arches and only adds 0.2 miles to your hike. The primitive trail is also usually less crowded. Remember to stay on the marked trails to protect the area’s biocrust.

There are rock cairns to help you stay on the trail and will take you passed the Bicep ArchSeagull Archand No Big Deal Arch. After about 1 milethe trail will angle back towards the Windows parking area.

Double Arch

Double Arch isn’t on the Window Trailbut the Double Arch trailhead shares a parking lotso it is well worth visiting this arch while you are here. It is another one of the famous and most photographed arches in the park.

Double Arch is unique in that there are two arches that have the same foundation for the outer sections of their arches. This arch was formed by water erosion going down rather than from the sidewhich lead to the double arch formation.

The Parade of Elephants

As you are walking to or from Double Arch from the southbe sure to look for the Parade of Elephants. There is a rock formation that looks like a family of elephants holding onto each other’s tails.

Other Fun Things to Do in Arches National Park

Visit Sand Dune Arch

If you’re visiting Moab with kids or are looking for a quick and easy hikeSand Dune arch is a must. It is a short distance from the parking area and a great place to let kids explore and play in the sand. This was one of my kids’ favorite stops in the park. HIKE TO DELICATE ARCH

Another great hike and one of the most popular Moab hiking trails is the Delicate Arch trail. It’s one of the best things to do in Moab. It is a more difficult hiking trailso keep that in mind. We made it with our seven-year-old twins and had a great time. There is some elevation gain and no shadeso make sure to bring plenty of water.

Explore the 4×4 Trails

There are 4×4 trails in Arches as well as in nearby Canyonlands like the Shafer Trail and the White Rim Road. There are guided 4×4 tours in Arches as well as 4×4 tours in Canyonlands.

If you’re open to exploring the off-road trailsthis is a great way to get a behind-the-scenes look at the park. You can visit some beautiful arches that only a few people get to see. Plus you can easily avoid the crowds by taking the back roads. If you don’t have your own 4×4 vehicleyou can join a guided Jeep tour.

Earn a Junior Ranger Badge

If you’re looking for things to do in Moab with kidswe highly recommend you stop by the Visitor Center and participate in the junior ranger program. My kids absolutely love learning about the area they are exploring and are so proud when they earn their badges.

Arches Scenic Drive

The road going through Arches is beautiful. Even if you don’t get out and explore the trailsthere is so much you can see from your car. You will be able to see lots of natural sandstone archesthe La Sal mountains in the distanceinteresting rock formationsand more.

Packing List for Arches National Park

Unless you are visiting in the dead of winteryou should be prepared with cool hiking clothes and lots of water. We hiked to Delicate Arch towards the end of Octoberand we were still sweating by the end and drank a ton of water.

Although it is warm during the daythe desert gets cold at night. If you’re visiting outside of July and Augustwe recommend bringing a light jacket. If you’re hiking at nightyou will want a light jacket. Plusit is perfect to have if you walk around downtown Moab at night or do some stargazing in the park.

Hiking Shoes

Having hiking shoes with strong ankle support is a great item to bring to Arches National Park. These boots will help protect your ankles and also helps provide very valuable traction while hiking. This traction is important when climbing up and down parts of the trails and climbing over rocks.

The sun is hot in Moabeven in the Spring monthslike Apriland Fall. It is always important to be prepared with adequate sun protectionincluding sunscreen and hats.

Insulated Waterbottles

We have switched almost all of our water bottles over to this insulated of water bottle. We got tired of having warm water on our hikes. The insulated waterbottles are a bit heavierso if that’s a concern for youwe have found it great to leave one in the carso you have some cold water for after your hike.

We will usually take two or three with us and then leave one in the car for the end of our hike.

Located on the Riverwalkthe Aarchway Inn is an amazing option. The Riverwalk is a widenicely shaded path along the North Fork of the Virgin River in Moab. It is one of the best hotels near Canyonlands and Arches National Park.

If you love nature walks and seeing wildlifethis may be the place for you. It is a 10-minute drive to the Arches National Park Visitor Center.

In addition to the RiverwalkAarchway Inn has an outdoor swimming pool and children’s poolwith sun loungers and pool umbrellas. They also offer a fitness centerheated poolplaygroundand hot tub.

Hyatt Place Moab (Mid-range)

The Hyatt Place Moabone of the best hotels in downtown Moabis located in a picturesque setting of red rocks. This hotel is fairly new and is very nice and accommodating. It is also one of the closest hotels to the entrance of Arches National Parkone of the most spectacular national parks in Utah.

The pool area is awesomewith a large heated poolhot tubsplash padand a small playground the kids enjoy climbing on. It offers many modern amenitiesincluding air conditioningpremium beddinglaptop-friendly workspacesfree wi-fi facilitiesand hair dryers.

The recreational opportunities include a fitness center and a playground. The hotel also offers a free buffet breakfast with many traditional and modern food options.

This pet-friendly hotel is one we recommend for not being too expensive and offering good value while only being a mile or so away from the downtown area. We love the added touches this hotel has to add to your stay – such as the outdoor fireplace by the pool and the snack bar. Hyatt Place Moab isn’t your cheapest optionbut it’s an excellent family-friendly hotel in Moab.
