How it all started

Back in 1998in French Polynesiaan idea was born from a simple question. Why not try to create synthetic palm leaves? With natural palm leaves being overharvested worldwide – and with their short shelf-life of 5 years at best – this seemed like the obvious solution…and the marketplace agreed.

Over five years in research and development ensued in an effort to create a unique product. Then in 2003Palmex International Inc. was set up and open for business. That very same yeara first wave of sales came through from French Polynesia. Over the yearsPalmex built a name for itself – known for product quality and durability – and is now a world leader in synthetic  thatch roofing.

Eager to share a vision for sustainable developmentwe offer an eco-friendly product range to fulfill today’s building and development demands without compromising the ability of future generations to fulfill their own. We are certified according to ISO 9001:2015 Quality management systems certifications.

Palmex industrial-strength and highly resistant materials suit all climates: this durability is what makes our product’s lifespan estimated at 50 years or more. Our products have been designed to provide a permanentlong-term solution to the problematic issue of massive over-harvesting of natural resources throughout the planet for the purpose of building exotic roofing. We help minimize the negative effects that real-estate development can have on the natural environment.

Product waste in all our plants is diverted from final disposal and sent to be recycled in other plastic manufacturing processes. Our packaging is kept to an absolute minimum for shipping and is made of Palmex production waste. We have also undergone a third-party verification process with Vertima Inc. and Athena Sustainable Materials Institute where Palmex International Inc. products and our entire supply chain were assessed. We received the Validated Eco-Declaration® Certification summarizing verified environmental claimsas well as Vertima’s Environmental Data Sheet®.

Thank you so much for getting us this thatch! It went on easily and has held up perfectly in the heavy windsrain and heat. We wanted to see if we could fool real Hawaiians so we blind folded three and took them to the Tiki to see if they would think they were still in Hawaii. Two out of three Hawaiians could not tell the difference between your thatch and real Hawaiian thatch and the third Hawaiian thougt she was in Fiji... so close enough!!!! The pavilion on the beach was created about 15 years ago as a venue to host weddings and group functions. The final outcome with the thatch roof and bamboo ceiling looks astonishing both during yoga and Pilates classes as well as during the wedding parties we host at night. You can enjoy a Tiki experience in your own backyard. I have put this roofing leaves on in 4 hours. My tools were a hammersome nails and some scissors. Really easy to install. It’s really typical 3-foot long shingles : you half lap them like ordinary shingles. It’s not rocket scienceas a matter of fact it’s really fun and I have fun every night coming home in my own backyard and looking at my pool shed because now my backyard reminds me of the Caribbean every single night!’

Hello PalmexI purchased your thatch from Tiki Mundo in 2007 to replace the real grass thatch I had installed on my Tiki Bar/Cabana in 2005. It is now 6 years later and the thatch still looks like new! It has stood up to everything from hot sunhigh windsrain and heavy snow we see here in Massachusetts. Our Palmex roof really makes the whole look and feel of our house and we feel that it is a very high quality material and the installation was professionally done. The first time we approached the product was because of the difficulty of supply of natural palm leaves after the cyclones so the natural Pandanus was not available and there was a price increaseso we had to lower our hotel charges. The perennity of the Palmex productthe self-maintenance (are advantages) because natural vegetal thatchthey are colonized by insects and after 2-3 years with the lightest wind or some waste coming off of the thatch we are obligated to clean the roof. Our hotel is a ethnicrustic hotel that tries to identify with the island’s culture and it’s environment. So when we thought about bettering the hotel’s imagewe had to find something appropriate. In Chilewe did not have the material that we needed. We started searching and we found Palmex. Nowwith Palmexthe hotel changed completely. What I like most is the aesthetic of the thatch and the fact that it lowers the temperature inside. The Palmex roof reduces the sound of the rain and it makes it more pleasant under a Palmex roof.
