General Undo and Redo in File Explorer in Windows 11

Undo_Redo_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to undo and redo your last action in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The Undo and Redo options in File Explorer allow you to quickly and easily correct mistakes made in File Explorer and most other apps.

The Undo option is only available after you perform an action such as CopyDeleteMovecreate New itemor Rename.

The Redo option is only available after you undo an action so you can restore the action you last undid.

Hello:alien:

These context menu items will only be available if you just performed an action (ex: delete) that's not permanent.
"delete) that's not permanent"
Aha little gotcha.

Soit has to be in Recycle Binand the Undo is merely a retrieval from there.

Partly correct. It has to be the last action (ex: CopyMoveDeleteetc...) that you did to be able to undo/redo it.

Soif I so happen to rename a fileTHEN delete itthere's no way to get the previous name back?
Because presumably the undo would only be able to bring it back from trash.

Correct. You'll have to manually rename it back.

Hi.

If the last action occurred hours agoyou might find difficult to know what exactly an accidental undo/redo command performed.

Thereforehere are the method to disable or enable this feature.

1 Disable Undo and Redo options

If you have a current Undo and/or Redo action availableperform an action or restart explorer process to remove them.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"MaxUndoItems"=dword:00000000

2 Enable Undo and Redo options

This is the default setting.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"MaxUndoItems"=-

3 Enable Undo and Redo options with custom maximum step

Theoretical maximum is 2^32 − 1 (4,294,967,295)but this is a technical data-type limitnot a known or recommended value for functionality.
Use a reasonable small numbersas high values could lead to unpredictable behavior or resource issues.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"MaxUndoItems"=dword:00000003
