Winter 2025 Top 3 Anime – Final Picks After Full Reviews

Best 3 Anime of Winter 2025
Best 3 Anime of Winter 2025

The Winter 2025 anime season was filled with highlightsand I’d like to share my personal best 3 anime of the Winter 2025.

This season featured several series that continued from Autumn 2024such as Orb: On the Movements of the Earth and Blue Box. Both were excellentbut Blue Box especially stood out to me. Despite belonging to the familiar genre of slice-of-life sports romanceit delivered an emotional impact that earned it a spot in my top 3.

And of courseno discussion of this season would be complete without mentioning Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World Season 3. The Counterattack Arc was particularly strongwith many pivotal scenes where major storylines from the past came to a head. It was undeniably a crucial season for the series.

From the perspective of new anime that premiered this winterMedalist was a standout. Despite its niche themethe blend of emotional realism and stunning animation captured the hearts of many viewers.

Looking aheadI’m excited for the continuation of The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 in the upcoming season. Among anime fansSolo Leveling: Arise from the Shadow (Season 2) was also a major hit this winter.

Spring 2025 Top 3 Anime – Final Picks After Full Reviews

Best 3 Anime of Spring 2025
Best 3 Anime of Spring 2025

I debated whether to include this short anime series in the best-of listbut in the endthe overall quality and sheer enjoyment made it impossible to leave out. That’s why I chose Lycoris Recoil: Friends are thieves of time. as the Best of the Best for Spring 2025. In many waysit felt like a new blueprint for what anime series could be.

Apocalypse Hotel was also incredibly unique—a well-crafted original anime packed with emotionhumorand satire. While the story and characters were certainly satisfyingwhat stood out most was the careful world-building and the way it was presented.

Speaking of original animeFood for the Soul was another standout and earned my No. 3 spot. Some fans might prefer Mono for its slice-of-life charmbut personallyI found Food for the Soul more thematically engaging. Its gentle tone and relaxed atmosphere felt like a perfect match for the genreand I rated it highly for that reason.

As for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXit probably generated the most buzz this season. Howeverit had elements that could easily place it in either a best or worst listso I decided to leave it out of my top three. That saidit deserves credit for sparking interest in the older Gundam series among a new generation of fans.

Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World (Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活)which is the most famous and popular Isekai anime series among both anime beginners and lovershas released its third and newest season since October last year. After the first season broadcast in 2016 and the second in 2020 and 2021the third season of Re:Zero consists of two parts: 8 episodes as the Attack Arc in Autumn 2024 and another 8 episodes as the Counterattack Arc in Winter 2025. White Fox is responsible for the animation production throughout the entire season.

The latest part airing from February 2025 focuses on the epic battle between the Subaru side and the side of four Sin Archbishops of the Witch Cult. The candidates and their allies are competing within the grand framework of the Royal Selection. At the same timethey must join forces to fight against an external enemythe Sin Archbishops of the Witch Cult. This dual structure makes the anime even more thrilling for viewers. If you have not watched the Re:Zero past episodes ever2025 is not too late for you to bear witness to this great series.

Season: Autumn of 2024 / Winter of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Living up to all expectationsRe:Zero Season 3 turned out to be the best anime of the Winter 2025 season. The intense battles between Subaru’s camp and the four Sin Archbishops of the Witch Cult were truly spectacular. The showdown between Wilhelm and Theresia was especially impactfulwith past episodes adding emotional depth and resonance to the story. The fight against the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony also brought a glimmer of hope for saving one of the main heroinesRem. All in allthis season has made us even more excited for Season 4.

2. Blue Box: ★★★★★

Though it is not purely an anime that began in 2025Blue Box (アオのハコ) is one of the best features in the firs period this yearairing as the second cour following the first part that started in the last autumn. It is the romantic-comedy anime adaptation based on the popular manga serialized on Weekly Shonen Jumpwhich has brought to the world with unusual quality by Telecom Animation Film. It is also well known among manga fans that the original comic book is created by female mangaka Kouji Miura.

Blue Box mainly depicts high school students’ love life and club activitiesand the love triangle between these three is interesting: TaikiChinatsu and Hina. There are certainly inner conflicts within each characterbut there is no ugliness at allwhich is what makes it so impressive. By the waythe surnames of these three characters represent “Ino Shika Cho” (BoarDeer and Butterfly)a traditional card combination in the Japanese game Hanafuda. This trio is often associated with balance and harmonybut when applied to human relationshipsit can also symbolize a delicate and sometimes unstable triangular dynamic.

Season: Autumn of 2024 / Winter of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Coming-of-ageromance anime often struggle to gain recognition from hardcore anime fans. But Blue Box was still a standout. While the premise is fairly standardthe two heroines are exceptionally compellingand no matter how things unfoldit tugs at your heart. That saidit’s by no means a painful watch—it has plenty of moments that’ll make you laugh and warm your heart. It’s a show that deserves to be seenregardless of age or gender. And since the anime has only just begunit’s easy to jump in.

3. Medalist: ★★★★★

There are some successful anime that has a theme of figure skatingand Medalist (メダリスト) has the potential to be the most highly acclaimed in its genrejust like Yuri on Ice. Adapted from Tsurumaikada’s manga series published since 2020it seems that this anime production by the studio ENGI has been warmly received among fans.

Medalist tells a story about how the dream of becoming a top figure skater can be realizedor whether it’s even possible at all. Moreoverthe presence of parents and coacheswho may struggle just as muchif not morethan the skater themselvesenhances the realism of this anime.

Season: Winter of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Medalist was a completely new anime that began this seasonand while expectations weren’t the highest at firstit undeniably became one of the standout titles of the season. It earned praise for the beauty of its skating animationthe heartfelt story of coach and the children’s growthand its grounded portrayal of serious real-life issues. 4. Orb: On the Movements of the Earth: ★★★★★

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth (チ。-地球の運動について-) is one of the best anime airing in 2025whose first half actually began in end of 2024. In recent yearsits original manga by Uoto has rapidly gained attentionand this particular work has been one of the most highly anticipated adaptations since then. Now that the anime has begunthe very first episode has already demonstrated a world of remarkable depthfully meeting those high expectations.

Madhouse adapted the story up to volume 8 of the manga and condensed it into a single 25-episode seasonwhich is a great decision. This structure ensures that even anime beginners will find it easy to follow.

Set in an era when the geocentric theory was endorsed by the Churcha highly intelligent boy named Rafal has a passion for astronomy. Howeverhis surroundings expect him to study theology instead. Everything changes when he meets Huberta man branded a hereticand learns that he is determined to prove the heliocentrismwhich is being strictly forbidden. Their pursuit of a truth punishable by death shows a powerful aesthetic of intellectual defiance. This anime possesses a one-of-a-kind-uniqueness unlike anything seen before.

Season: Autumn of 2024 / Winter of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth was a powerful work thatin terms of story impactcould very well be considered one of the best anime of 2025. With the original manga being relatively shortthe series wrapped up neatly in a single 25-episode season—a definite plus. It’s also a great entry point for anime newcomers. This is a story that makes you feel the weight of human historyexploring how individuals challenge overwhelming powers and the level of resolve required to do so. It’s safe to call it a masterpiece.

5. The Apothecary Diaries (Season 2): ★★★★★

In an era where anime categories have become more clearly definedThe Apothecary Diaries (薬屋のひとりごと) stands out as a somewhat unique presence. It is not just a mysterynor just a comedyromanceor historical drama—it is a fusion of all these elements. The first season of The Apothecary Diaries launched with 24 episodes in 2023 and 2024adapted from Natsu Hyuga’s light novel series. Andthe second season came back in the beginning of 2025.

Maomao’s sharp analysis of various incidents and power strugglesoften involving mysterious deaths within the imperial haremremains unchanged from the first seasonalmost as if she were a detective. Another key highlight of the new arc is the evolving relationship and shifting distance between her and Jinshithe eunuch who serves as the other main character.

Additionallythe story casts a spotlight on foreign relations with this Chinese country and introduce new supporting characterspromising plenty of intriguing developments ahead. With its compelling contrast between serious cases and peacefulcomedic everyday momentsthis anime is definitely worth keeping an eye on this year.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 has been confirmed to air for two consecutive courswhich means the second cour will begin in April.

Season: Winter of 2025 / Spring of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 was thoroughly enjoyable andfor some viewersmight even be considered the best anime of the season. While it didn’t have the same impact as Season 1the consistency in tying past cases to present events deserves recognition. With the second cour starting in Aprilthere’s plenty to look forward to. Of courseMaomao remains a compelling protagonistbut we should also keep a close eye on Jinshi and the mystery surrounding his true identity.

7. Sakamoto Days: ★★★☆☆

Blending comedyactionand slice-of-life elementsSakamoto Days follows Taro Sakamotoa former legendary hitman who retires to run a convenience store at peace with his wife and kid. At the same timehe finds himself constantly pulled back into his old life. With a unique no-kill rule and an arsenal of clever tacticsSakamoto fends off assassins while maintaining his peaceful life. The manga’s fast-paced action and humor with various cool characters have made it a fan-favorite.

Many fans initially believed that the true star of the Winter 2025 anime season would be Sakamoto Daysand to be fairit is an entertaining anime. Howevergiven the popularity of the original mangait wouldn’t have been surprising if it had completely dominated this season. That being saidthe general impression so far is that it remains in the realm of “a well-made anime” rather than standing out as an absolute hit. With major manga like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen coming to an endSakamoto Days has taken on the role of representing Weekly Shonen Jump.

Of courseonly the introductory episodes have aired so farso there’s still plenty of room for its reputation to grow depending on how the adaptation unfolds. Let’s look forward to seeing how it develops. And don’t get the wrong idea: this is undoubtedly one of the must-watch anime of the year.

Another half of the first season of Sakamoto Days is set to air from July 2025.

Season: Winter of 2025 / Summer of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

As the original manga promisedthe story was engaging and the characters were compelling. Howeverwhen it comes to whether the anime adaptation surpassed the mangait’s a bit hard to say. I had hoped it would become one of the best of the seasonbut in the endit didn’t quite exceed expectations. Let’s look forward to the next cour.

7 Best Anime of Spring 2025 (April-June)

1. Lycoris Recoil: Friends are thieves of time. (Short Movies): ★★★★★

Lycoris Recoil aired in 2022 as a completely original anime series with no source materialand quickly became known as one of the best anime of the year. Since thena new project has been officially announcedand while fans await its releasea short series titled Lycoris Recoil: Friends are thieves of time. (『リコリス・リコイル』Friends are thieves of time.) will be released as a prelude. The series will consist of six episodes and will be available on streaming platforms starting April 162025.

According to the announcementthe story will depict small everyday moments at Café LycoRecoso we likely won’t see intense action scenes or major developments in the main storyline. That saidfor fansit’s precisely the daily lives of Chisato and Takina that are the most enjoyable to watch.

For those who haven’t seen the original yetthe main series is only 13 episodes long—making it an easy and highly recommended entry point even for anime newcomers. As a personal predictionthe next major installment continuing the main storyline feels more likely to come in the form of a feature-length anime film rather than another TV series. Either waywe’ll be keeping a close eye on future developments in the Lycoris Recoil project.

Season: Spring of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Lycoris Recoil: Friends are Thieves of Time is a six-episode short series filled with charmcomedyand surprisingly high production quality. From Chisato warning Takina about casually carrying gunsto a horror-themed prank that reveals Takina’s wild sideeach episode offered fresh humor and character-driven moments. Highlights include Takina secretly trying on Chisato’s old uniformMizuki’s wild dessert menu ideaand Chisato getting distracted by Hawaii travel plans during a serious DA mission. Despite its brief runtimethe series never felt minor. Insteadit deepened the bonds between characters and left fans excited for what might come next in the LycoReco universe.

2. Summer Pockets: ★★★☆☆

Fans of Key’s anime adaptationsthe wait is finally over. Summer Pockets comes to life as an animebringing another emotionally rich story from the renowned visual novel studio Key. Compared to Angel Beats! in (2010)created by Jun MaedaSummer Pockets leans more toward the heartwarming drama of Clannad (2007-2009)another beloved Key title.

Originally released in 2018 as Key’s 13th visual novelSummer Pockets has now been adapted into an anime by Studio Feel. With its deeply moving narrative and breathtaking views of a remote island floating in a calm blue seathe series promises to deliver a memorable emotional experience. 3. Lazarus: ★★☆☆☆

*Lazarus has been moved to the Worst Anime of 2025 section.

4. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: ★★★★☆

Gundam fans have every reason to be excitedbut even those unfamiliar with the franchise shouldn’t shy away from this long-running series. Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (2022–2023) proved that even newcomers could fully enjoy a Gundam title without prior knowledge of the seriesand Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (機動戦士Gundam GQuuuuuuX) is crafted with that same accessible approach.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX also marks a major collaboration between Sunrisethe studio that has long supported the Gundam franchiseand Studio Kharaknown for the Evangelion series. It’s the first time the two iconic studios have teamed up. The series is directed by Kazuya Tsurumakibest known for Rebuild of Evangelion and the cult classic FLCL.

In Januarya compilation film titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- was releasedfeaturing re-edited versions of select episodes. It has already created a buzz among anime fans. The full series begins airing this April—don’t miss it.

Amate Yuzurihaa high school girl living peacefully in a space colonyfinds her life turned upside down after meeting a mysterious girl named Nyaan. Their encounter draws her into Clan Battlean underground and illegal mobile suit dueling competition. Amate pilots the GQuuuuuuX and plunges into a series of intense battles. Around the same timea mysterious mobile suit known only as a “Gundam” appears before heralong with its pilot—a boy named Shujiwho is being pursued by both the space military and the police. As their paths crossthe world stands on the brink of a new era.

Season: Spring of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Among the recent entries in the Gundam franchiseMobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX may very well be one of the most unconventional and polarizing. It’s likely that opinions will be split between longtime Gundam fans and newcomers alike. That saidI personally found myself looking forward to each new episode and genuinely enjoyed watching it every week.

Setting aside the storyline that often defied conventional logicthe series showcased remarkably refined animation and character design. While it told the story of new characters—MachuNyaanand Shuji—it also served as a kind of homage to earlier Gundam worksmost notably through its allusions to the legendary character Char Aznable. The central narrative structurein which the world was ultimately one created by a girl to protect someone dear to herwasn’t particularly groundbreaking. The decision to wrap up the story in just 12 episodes also left the impression of a somewhat abrupt conclusion.

Even sohaving the opportunity to witness a Gundam series produced by Studio Kharaled by directors like Kazuya Tsurumaki and Hideaki Annomade it a title well worth discussingregardless of whether one loved it or not.

5. Mono: ★★★☆☆

Could Mono be the next Laid-Back Campa beloved anime that connects fiction with real-world locations and fuels anime tourism? Set to air this AprilMono is one of the most anticipated anime of the spring season. As the character designs suggestthe original manga is by Afrothe same mangaka behind Laid-Back Camp. Since its debut in 2017the Mono manga has been serialized at a relaxed pace. Like Laid-Back CampMono also centers around a high school clubbut this time the focus isn’t on camping. Insteadit follows the activities of the Cinephoto Cluba fusion of the photography and film clubs.

Satsuki Amamiyaa high school photography club memberfeels discouraged after her beloved club president graduates. With encouragement from her best friend An Kiriyamashe regains her motivation—only to face a new problem when a 360° camera she bought online never arrives. Their search for the seller leads them to a nearby candy shop. Therethey meet manga artist Haruno Akiyamawho asks them to be models for her new work. Joined by Sakurako Shikishimaa former film club memberthe group forms the Cinephoto Club. Togetherthey begin helping Haruno with her mangaleading to unexpected experiences and new bonds.

Season: Spring of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

The Mono anime itself is by no means a bad adaptation—in factit faithfully captures the charm of the original manga. Howeverthe simple truth is that Mono had direct comparisonsand it just didn’t surpass them.

The first comparison that comes to mind is Laid-Back Campanother anime adaptation based on a manga by the same creator. As a slice-of-life anime about high school girlsI personally preferred Laid-Back Camp. Additionallywhen compared to Food for the Soulanother slice-of-life anime from the same seasonthe difference isn’t drasticbut I still found Mono to fall slightly short—mainly due to my personal preferences in terms of theme and characters.

6. Food for the Soul: ★★★★★

One reason to keep an eye on Food for the Soul (日々は過ぎれど飯うまし) is that it’s a completely original anime—not based on a manga or light novel. In a time when most new shows are adaptationsthis original project by P.A. Works stands out. Another reason for the buzz is that the story concept comes from Attothe creator of the beloved slice-of-life series Non Non Biyori.

P.A. Works is known for producing high-quality slice-of-life anime like Shirobako and Skip and Loafer come to mindso their collaboration on this series feels like a perfect match. During the Spring 2025 anime seasonFood for the Soul is likely to be compared with Monoanother title in the same genrewhich should make for an engaging watch for fans of daily-life dramas.

The story follows Makoa college student who loves food but tends to keep her distance from others. She joins her university’s food culture research clubonly to find that it doesn’t really do much. StillFood for the Soul promises to be a treat for food anime fanswith mouthwatering visuals that celebrate the joy of eating.

Season: Spring of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Food for the Soul was easily the best slice-of-life anime of the season. The character designs were remarkably consistentand each character was not only well-defined but also maintained a high level of animation quality throughout every scene. Hitsujiin particularstood out with a highly original and memorable personality.

The background art was also impressivecapturing real-world locations with enough detail to make the show enjoyable as a kind of anime pilgrimage for fans. The food featured in the anime was another highlight—not in the hyper-realistic trend we often see todaybut rather beautifully illustrated in a way that fit the anime’s overall aesthetic. With Attothe creator of Non Non Biyoricredited as the original concept creatorit’s no surprise that the series excelled in capturing the gentle charm of everyday life.

7. Apocalypse Hotel: ★★★★★

Apocalypse Hotel (アポカリプスホテル) arrived with almost no hype or expectations and was largely under the radar prior to its release. This comes as no surprise since it’s an original anime with no manga or novel source materialcreated as a joint project between CyberAgent and CygamesPictures. The anime was produced by CygamesPicturesthe same studio behind Uma Musume: Cinderella Gray in the same season. The series consists of 12 episodes.

In a future where humans have long disappeareda robot-run hotel quietly stands in the heart of GinzaTokyo. Apocalypse Hotel follows Yachiyoa hotelier robot whoalongside her fellow staffpatiently waits for humanity’s return. After 100 years of silencethe first guest finally arrives—but it’s not a human. One by oneextraterrestrial beings begin to check in. Are they here as peaceful visitorsinvadersor something else entirely?

Season: Spring of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Apocalypse Hotel may not have been the most-watched anime of the seasonbut as a post-apocalyptic seriesit’s rare to find one that so earnestly portrays a ruined world while still delivering so much humor. From the very beginningthe story shows a desolate version of Tokyo’s Ginza district—setting a surprisingly emotional toneespecially for viewers familiar with the real city. Amid this ruined landscapethe hotel staff robot Yachiyo continues to operate the hotelwaiting for humanity to return from their evacuation into space.

One of the most surprising moments comes in Episode 11when Yachiyo is granted time off and wanders through the abandoned streets of Tokyo. In many post-apocalyptic storiesthis scene (which widely shows the ruined world) might have been placed in the first episode—but Apocalypse Hotel chooses to show it much laterreinforcing its commitment to world-building and thematic consistency. The series ends on a satisfying notewith a sharp satirical take on the relationship between humanity and the environment.

And despite all the serious storytellingthis show is genuinely hilarious. From the moment the tanuki-like aliensincluding Ponkoarrive and settle into the hotelthe comedy never lets up. A scene where a wedding and funeral are held simultaneously is just one of many unexpected comedic (and even moving) highlights. When Yachiyo is repaired and fitted with tank treads for legsit’s absurd in the best way. Ponko—who turns out to be a secret genius—emerges as such a livelyendearing character that she almost steals the show from Yachiyo.

Even the occasional battle scenes are visually impressivewith effects and animation that rival standard action anime. In factthe sheer contrast between the comedy and these intense scenes only makes them more memorable. All in allit was a truly fantastic 12-episode run.

List of the Worst Anime of 2025

1. Zenshu

It’s disappointing to have to name Zenshu (全修。) as one of the “worst” anime of 2025. That being saidit’s not the absolute worst anime out there. The reason it’s being mentioned here is thatdespite sky-high expectations before its releaseit ultimately failed to meet them. Back in March 2024Mappathe anime studio behind recent mega-hits like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Manannounced that they would be producing a completely original anime. Naturallymany anime fans were incredibly excited.

The title Zenshu refers to a term in the Japanese anime industry meaning “complete revision” or “all retakes.” Early teasers and promotional materials suggested that the anime would depict the world of anime production. Many peopleincluding meexpected something in the vein of that kind of anime like Shirobako.

Howeverwhen Zenshu finally airedit turned out to be yet another Isekai animelacking much originality. The animation and worldbuilding are well doneand there are certainly viewers who will enjoy it. But given the hype surrounding itmany had hoped for something more unique and innovative. I’ll say it again. Being labeled as a “worst” here simply means that it is an anime worth discussing.

Update after watching the anime:

It’s true that this wasn’t just an ordinary isekai anime. You could really feel that Mappaas the studio behind ithad something meaningful they wanted to convey. On the other handwhen viewed purely as a fantasy anime or slice-of-life with the theme of anime creation in terms of story and charactersit’s hard to say whether it offered anything truly innovative or exceptionally compelling. It leaves you thinking.

2. Lazarus

A groundbreaking new anime is set to take the world by storm in Spring 2025—Lazarus. From its very first visualsanime fans may be reminded of the legendary Cowboy Bebopand for good reason: the series is directed by none other than Shinichiro Watanabethe visionary behind Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.

But Watanabe isn’t the only big name attached to this highly anticipated project. The creative team behind Lazarus is nothing short of stellar. Character designs are handled by Akemi Hayashiknown for her work on Banana Fishwhile action sequences are supervised by Chad Stahelskithe acclaimed director of the John Wick film series. The animation is produced by none other than Mappathe powerhouse studio behind modern hits like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.

In a peaceful future brought about by a miracle drug called Hapunathe world is shaken when its creatorDr. Skinnerresurfaces after disappearing for three years. He reveals a horrifying truth: Hapuna was a trapand everyone who took it will die in 30 days. The only hope for humanity lies in a single vaccinehidden away by Skinner himself. To stop the countdown to global catastrophea special team known as “Lazarus” is assembled.

The team includes Axela fugitive with extraordinary physical abilities; Dougthe brilliant strategist and brains of the operation; Christinea skilled firearms expert; Lelanda drone specialist; and Eleinaa world-renowned hacker. Togetherthey must race against time to find Skinner and uncover his true motives—before it’s too late.

Season: Spring of 2025

Update after watching the anime:

Despite being a 1990s animeCowboy Bebop remains globally popular even todayand naturallymany fans expected something similar from its director Shinichiro Watanabe. With his creative direction combined with cutting-edge visual technologysome believed Lazarus had the potential to be one of the best anime of 2025. Howeverafter watching all 13 episodesit fell short of those expectations.

That saidthere were definitely aspects worth praising. The background art used to build the world was stunningand Axel’s parkour-based action scenes were genuinely impressive.

On the other handwhile Lazarus attempted to tackle serious issues such as racial diversitywealth inequalityscientific overreachand cultsthese themes seemed to be addressed only on a superficial level. The inclusion of characters like a hacker and a drone specialist also appeared to be a convenient nod to recent trends.

For a compact 13-episode seriesthe pacing often felt slow. The repeated template of infiltrating a new location to search for Dr. Skinnerending in failure but picking up a small cluequickly grew predictable. Was the assassin who ends up facing Axel really necessary? Since this character had no real connection to the main plot of searching for Skinnerit came across as a forced attempt to inject excitementending with only unrealistic action scenes. Ironicallythe earlier episodeswith action sequences supervised by Chad Stahelskihad a much more grounded and engaging feel.

Lazarus is certainly worth discussing as one of the notable anime titles of 2025. StillI personally would not include it in the year’s best anime lineup.

The anime scene in 2025 is more highly anticipated than ever. When selecting the Best Anime of 2025it’s not just about popularity; overall quality and originality also play a crucial role. I focus on titles that excel in one or more of these criteriaand naturallyonly anime scheduled for release in 2025 are considered. Even for anime that have not yet airedthey have been included in this Best Anime of 2025 list based on factors such as anticipationthe track record of the production studioand the reputation of the original work. BelowI’ve divided the main criteria for choosing these standout titles into four key categories.

1. Popularity & Anticipation

How much buzz a series generates among anime fansor how much attention it garners even before its releaseis a vital factor in determining the best anime of 2025. In practical termsthe number of views on official trailers and the level of engagement on social media platformsand the extent of promotional campaigns both in Japan and worldwide serve as important indicators. Furthermoreif the anime is adapted from a well-known source material such as a mangalight novelor video gamethere is often already an established fan communityleading to higher anticipation.

2. Studio & Staff

The track record of the studio handling the animation is a major clue when it comes to gauging the overall quality of a series. Studios like MappaUfotable and Kyoto Animation are renowned for their high-quality visuals and distinctive directionhaving produced numerous hit titles over the years.

Additionallythe background and skills of the director and scriptwriter should not be overlooked. When a team that has a history of creating successful works comes togetherviewers can expect a high level of storytelling and animationdirectly impacting the final quality of the anime.

3. Story

A series that delivers both a compelling narrative and a sense of novelty leaves a strong impression. A well-crafted storyline that draws viewers inas well as innovative settings not found in other animeare significant factors in capturing the hearts of fans. Additionallymoments of natural humor that genuinely make you laugh and heart-wrenching sadness that pierces the soul can intensify the emotional impactfurther immersing audiences in the story. Moreoverwhether the characters have depth and undergo development throughout the story is also crucial in determining whether viewers can truly connect with the work.

4. Genre Representation

When compiling a list of must-watch anime for 2025it’s important to consider a variety of genres. From action and fantasy to romance and science fictionoffering a lineup that appeals to a wide range of viewers is key. Recentlyanime has been offering fresh experiences by combining genres that have rarely intersected beforepushing the boundaries of what the medium can achieve.
